Alternative way to serve jail sentense

I was thinking about finding suitable alternative fuels because natural resources are being used up in a fast rate and because of the alarming problems the greenhouse effect has been causing.
One crazy thought ran through my mind.
The idea is to let criminals generate electricity for their own prison. By the most conventional way - riding bicylce-like machines. Just like how cyclists attach dynamo at the rear of their bikes and the actions of the pedaling generate electrcity to light the bulb.
I'm talking about having almost the whole population of a prison except the old, weak and disable inmates take the ride. About 2-3 hours daily for each inmate would be enough ba. The generated energy can be stored in battery cells and be use partially to power lights and other electrical equiments.
For just this, isn't it a way to save electricity?? Sure, it may be seems little because its only a building. But isn't it a start?
Well, you never know, maybe because of this crime rate might drop too cos ppl might be scare shitless thinking of riding a stationary bike everyday. -
Prisoners also human, key to to a sentence is deterrence and rehabilitation and not making them monkeys, hamsters and a means to our ends.

Maybe we can have a sweat shop for violent criminals....make them work 12hrs a day sew clothes and make shoes so that we can sell them cheap..dun have to import from China. -

lol.. not so efficient la.. the prisoner on the bike would have to ride like hell to light up the bulbs.
using a 2 stage pendulumn would be much better -
