My friends in this industry told me there are still people paid just over 1k but had to slog day and night.
I think there are too many designers around, hard to really be outstanding.

bad industry... low pay general... if u beri good, mebe only $3k odd... then one day u are creative director in a big advertising firm, mebe $5k+... but soon new talent wif creative ideas join, they find u overpaid, then sack u.. after all.. 'art' is subjective... some young upstart mite own u anytime...
why pay $5k to a 30 yr old 'over-e-hill' guy when got a new 22 yo fresh grad wif many good ideas n skills etc....
do it for passion.. not for $$.. unless u very lucky..but is one in a million kind.. mebe u win awards/contest.. like SBTG, formerly multimedia designer but win Nike contest then become famous underground icon liao.. but dunno how long it will last...
else freelance or open ur own co. ... still mite earn.. but a lot of competition....
