its true our speaking abililty is poor. even though the taiwanese and hong kongers arent fully educated in english they do make an effort to speak properly.
we may be better in english but our chinese standard really sucks as compared to them.

ahahaha!
their sucking in english is understandable because they are proud of being chinese and speak chinese all the time like the japanese are proud of being japanese and their language whereas we have half co.ck english and chinese and go around telling people we are good at both languages
at first me was anger of wat they said to us.
but after seeing the blog, i kinda find disgusting dat singaporeans r kinda blown up of this whole issue. the host already said sorry but those comments replied r kinda harshly. ![]()
This only proves that Singaporeans have no sense of humour, even if it's laughing at ourselves.

LOL! I think you are gravely mistaken. have you ever heard a taiwanese speak english (other than those educated overseas)? they are trying so hard to speak in the american accent! they are not speaking english not because they are so proud of their chinese that they speak it all the time, rather, it is because most feel so inadequate in completing a sentence in english without pausing at least 3 times!
Go know more taiwanese and do your research rather than sitting in front of the computer and dream of reasons.

There is a difference between joking and mocking.

it is understandable to want to speak with the american accent. after all they are the strongest english speaking country in the world and most well known. did you expect them to want to speak with our singaporean accent?
when they speak in english it is just to be different for a while. like the japanese. they dont give a damn to use 2 languages together...

If one is proud of him/herself, he/she would not mimic others' accent! i don't know about you, I'm proud to say I've never mimic anyone's accent.
Stay original!
Have your own identity!
Have some pride!

It is ok to criticize us. Yes, we are not perfect, we have flaws. We welcome comments, constructive comments. But those celebrities, who themselves have problems speaking even a single fluent sentence of English, have the cheeks to criticise us! Well, that is still fine i think. Worse is, they twist their words around.
Have you ever heard of Singaporeans say dance when they mean to say thanks? i have not.
Have you ever heard of Singaporeans say "one-taty, two-taty" when they meant to say 'one-thirty, two-thirty'? i have not.
YOu can criticise us of our local slang. No problem. You can say that we use a lot of "lah" and "lor", no problem too. But please, be honest. Don't twist words around and put them into our mouths. This, we will not tolerate.

Thank you for your fair comment with regards to that taiwanese guy's purpose mis-pronounciation of "thanks" just to mock at us.
With regards to "one taty two taty", if i can prove that it has been said in that program, are you gonna apologise to me for wrongly accusing me of making things up? via the same media that you accuse me? If you are not prepared to do so, go do your homework and stop yanking here that others are making things up!

i dont think he mis pronounced it on purpose.

Whether he did that on purpose or not, you can tell from his expression, his smug look. His pronounciation gets more and more exaggerated as his mis-pronounciation garnered more and more laughter! You might not be able to tell, many can (including me). It takes some degree of ability to observe to tell anyway! wont expect that from you.
I do not need you to apologise actually. i just hope that people (including You) will be more responsible for their words. Dont just yank for the sake of yanking!
A clue for you. Pay attention to what the girl in red sitting in the centre. She is the one who said one taty two taty. If you still cant get it, i can tell you the exact second when that happened when i am back. Ok, going to paint the town red! Ciao.
ok i found the taty.
and now that i turned the volume up i find no diff between his thanks and our thanks

I can't believe that the Taiwanese have the cheek to criticise our English. I am confident that we speak much much better English than the majority of Taiwanese. Of course we have our slang and colloquial, and so are other English countries such as the UK and US.
