NParks uses 4,000 flowers for its Chingay Parade float

SINGAPORE : The Chingay Parade this weekend promises to impress with colourful and glitzy floats. But it is not just a feast for the eyes.

This year, new entrant National Parks Board (NParks) is making its debut, with something that appeals to one’s sense of smell as well.

It is a fresh take on an event that is into its 36th year.

NParks aims to re—create a lush and tropical garden for its first—ever Chingay Parade float, dressing it up with fresh blooms and plants.

A total of 4,000 flowers and plants has been used for the float.

The flowers have been specially picked not just from Singapore and but other parts of Asia as well — at a cost of at least S$20,000.

It is also a promotional gimmick, with it being called the "Singapore Garden Festival" float, named after the biennial international show organised by NParks.

Award—winning local designer Alan Tan said he was inspired by three garden creatures.

He explained, "The whole design goes around the three mascots. Basically, I have the grasshopper sitting on the rock, playing the violin, serenading the flowers; the bee, our new mascot this year, actually dancing around the flowers; and of course my ladybug. Basically, this is their home. In my imagination, this is their home that I’ve created."

Members of the public can get creative too. They can join a contest to name the mascots and if their choice is picked, they will win an iPod touch worth S$698.

The public can get more details of the SMS contest at this website — CNA/ms

Red Bull Racing F1 car to be part of Chingay Parade

SINGAPORE : For the first time, Singaporeans will get to see a real F1 car on Singapore roads, even before the actual race in September.

The car has been brought in by the Red Bull Austria racing team, and will be part of the Chingay Parade on Saturday.

Engineers are putting the race car through the paces — checking and ensuring that the gear, hydraulic and other systems are fine.

The car was air—freighted from London last week, together with four tonnes of equipment and a team of 10 men to get the whole set—up going.

Julian Mills, Showcar Coordinator, Red Bull Racing, said, "It is an old race car, two years old...it’s the same as a race car, we have the ride height, a little bit higher to care for some bumps which you are going to get more of on a street circuit. We have bigger fans, we have fans fitted to the radiator to try and cool the car because the car cools by going fast through the air."

The Singapore performance will see the car hitting 200—kilometres per hour instead of the 300—kilometres it can achieve.

The car will also do spins, burnouts and start—stops along the City Hall and Raffles Avenue route.

The car is ready to go and come Friday, the car will be brought to the actual location at City Hall for the Chingay preview show, and come Saturday, millions of Singaporeans will be catching it ’live’ on television as it goes through its paces.

Test driver Robert Wickens will be the man to give Singaporeans their first taste of F1 action. — CNA/ms

Chingay Parade travels to northern Singapore

SINGAPORE : The Chingay Parade received an encore in the heartlands on Sunday as it travelled to the northern part of the island.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who is also the MP for Sembawang GRC, launched the travelling parade in Woodlands at the open field next to Causeway Point Shopping Mall.

Mr Khaw also unveiled couplets and lit up the Chingay floats.

He led the procession on top of a HIPPO bus.

The travelling parade consists of 10 Chingay floats.

Some 4,000 turned up at the launch. Among them were some new Singapore citizens, who were invited to travel with the Chingay procession from Woodlands to Yishun.

On Saturday, the parade was at Bishan and Toa Payoh, attracting crowds by the hundreds with its riot of noise and colour. — CNA/ch
