then I think we would have raised a sad brood of kids if they are unable to differentiate between the wild animals and strays ....
even wild life biologists acknowledges the neccessity of culling at times ... from kangaroo to elephants, there's only a x number of a certain species that a given area can support, but I digress
in the end, I do not see any way out but to call in the environment people to do what they will with the animals, simply because people are unwilling to desist from feeding the cats .... but of course ... they'll turn to hunting other wild creatures like birds perhaps, back in canada, feral cats (read: strays) are culled and shot ... because of the damage they do to the bird and small mammals population. What other course of action are there, but to get rid of them ? ... blame the irresponsible "cat lovers" who abandoned them in the first place of course ....

It is a basic respect of life in general - which extends to living people as well. Do you feel we should inculcate the value system any living thing's right to live is its position in human society? Therefore.. ok to kill off any animal that is a stray loh. STRAY only ma.
It's like some people are not useful to society - so why not just cull them?
So if we MUST cull - then the decision process must be made clear that it HAS gone through comprehensive thought. and not a simple "let's get rid of them". Notice that I am not saying that culling should NEVER happen. But it should not be viewed as a 'convenient solution' to human being's problems.
and some of our problems INCLUDE educating irresponsible pet owners.<< But so easy to point the finger to animal lovers and say "EH yo animal lover - go teach them la u so much time!" right and fold your arms and grumble "no use one, this bunch of people" because only animals lovers are 'responsible' for this problem, and the 'rest of society' isn't.
Why some pple have such a one-tracked mind ? why ?

it's easy to point fingers at other sections of society for doing nothing and shrinking responsibility, but if you think about it, who are the people who foisted the stray cats onto other people ? ... we did not asked for the cats, why should we who don't want them around be saddled with the responsibility of looking after them ? ... put yourself in the man's shoes and imagine it's your car who got scratched, or put yourself in mine when I had to suffer for the longest time the stench of putrefying rice and rotting fish along the pavements of my neighbourhood, to say nothing of the pests that comes along with it, and have to pick up lumps of turd from the lawn ....
and while it's easy to argue that all life is equally precious, I still think it is wrong to place a human beings as equals alongside animals ... if an apartment catches fire, no contests, the humans would be rescued first, period. again, I have to ask the question, if all life is equally precious, how many "animal lovers" are full time, hard core vegetarians ? .... isn't that "selective interpretation" in another form too ? ...
I do not enjoy the deaths of these animals anymore than you do (but only just, since I'm a carnivore and I love my meat) ... if the cat lovers here can get rid of those cats by putting them all up in foster homes, fine ! ... at least there'll be someone to pick up their turd .... but strays in the neighbourhood would always been a no-no to me ...

I should show you my new toy .... it's one of those electric tennis racket mozzie-swatter ....
two chaps in my neighbourhood contracted dengue already ...
come to think of it, wasn't there a stray cat cull during the SARS crisis ? ...
Fatum, as long the stray cats didn't commit any serious crime.. Don't u think they deserve a place in this society? The earth didn't belong only to human, it also belongs to the animals too.

Does it necessarily mean you have to eradicate them because they make your life slightly unpleasant ?

like I said before, if you can take them all in, fine, good for you ..... just get them out of the public space ...
but I fail to see why the public has to suffer the consequences of the irresponsibilities of other people, be they cat lovers, or people who abandoned the cats ... or let their hygiene and peace be compromised by the narrow interests of a small group of people and animals ...
spared a thought to those who cannot deal with cats before ? .. people allergies, children who may come into contact with the parasites in their turd .... the diseases they may spread ? ....

Yes but there are already measures implemented to control population of the cats. Most of the cat lovers clean up after feeding, fines are also implemented to defer, in addtion, singapore government employ lot of cleaners to clean up any rubbish on the floor.

I don't think there are fines in place for feeding cats .... monkeys, yes .... but not cats ... see above...
ironic isn't it .... and yes, there are already measures in place to control the population ... it's called culling, sorry, truth hurts ...

Awww.. poor things....have to suffer non-life threatening allergies and dirty shit.. and all the things that MAY happen... and gosh.. let their peace and hygiene be COMPROMISED by the narrow interests of a small group of people and animals.... life sucks, doesn't it?
looks like you are really trying very hard to justify killing the cats and giving all the reasons for it. I am sorry I really can't be convinced by your reasons - which you keep repeating anyway - your basic premise being that YOUR personal life as a human being is more important than a bunch of living things (who are incidentally not human beings unfortunately). (of course you also entreat us to consider other people who think like you, which is very neighbourly.)
Although think these reasons are shallow and self-centred but I realise it is unfair to impose my beliefs on yours.
Afterall, you are better than those who abuse them, then kill them. All you do is get someone else to kill them.. humanely even! it is not your fault that you don't want to spend the time or money in other methods of control - for example, cat repellent pellets that prevent them from entering your compound. (but who wants to spend money for these, when you can kill them for free!)
If you need to resort to this to gain peace of mind and to even lead a normal life - then I guess I would be really inconsiderate to try and convince you to stop killing cats.

There are many solutions to the problems.
It isn't just culling. It also called sterilisation.
Other alternative: Providing a shelter for them.
By culling or removing them totally from the public space implies some form of intolerance.
Yang0923 i read some of the posts and let's face it, my conclusion is, most guys are VERY MUCH LESS compassionate than girls! this forum makes me sick really, most people here are very much into arguments than anything else! if you are not interested to help, can you just shut up? it does not hurt you!
the other thing is, the cats are not dirting your houses, what is the big fuss then? does the law state that we human beings are the only ones with the right to roam the streets?
"How a man treats an animal says a lot about his charaters"!
Originally posted by UVVodka:Fatum hey please don't turn sg into another africa, "culling elephants just becase they fear of elephant overpopulation", or another china, "rounding up cats and putting them in cages the size of microwave ovens where they are left to die so that there are no stray cats on the streets during the olympics"!"How a country treats its animals says a lot about the country itself!"with your intelligient brain, all you can think of is culling is it. do we have to resort to cruelty? do you know that human beings are also animals too, so if we could cull an elephant, we could cull a human being hor, after all sg is getting more and more over populated!
I'll say it again ... if you guys can take in all of the cats, fine ... I don't enjoy seeing them killed either ...
but you have to face the fact that when it comes down to the bare choices, the lives and health of human beings will take precedence ....
you can scream and shout, you can protest and be up in arms .... but when the next bout of SARS like virus or other bugs with an animal vector comes along, the authorities will cull them all the same, and I'll applaud them for it.
and what makes me harden my attitude is the kind of sanctimonious, militant attitude adopted by the so-called "animal lovers"... I presume you haven't seen the video posted up ? ... go on, take a look first
Sigh this thread is goin no where...
Should realy changed to...
"Animal lovers vs Animal Haters"

Im the Minor Guy.
Sometimes u all very sien lei..
why like to compare this and that.. cat and human blabla.
plz la.. wan to argue or debate , straight to the point la.. its the cat.. dun compare this and that..so sien. From cat to birds flu...even primary 1 dont know why u stray too much of cats topic
I can see a very simple solution to it.
If you like cats, adopt it, help it, whatever. If you don't, don't even post or even bother, why piss yourselves off? Don't you have other things to worry about? Will stray cats affect your job? Your marriage? Or whatever else that needs worrying off?
Someone is being nice and is trying to help those poor cats. They're animals, and they have lives too. Just like us.
People worry about litter, food, poo and crap. If you own a cat, or know about it, you should know cats aren't like dogs, which just leaves a big mess behind.
For people who are feeding them in public. Do your job, clean up after yourselves.
Everyone plays their part. Everyone is happy. Why flame in the first place?
Or is that always the case in SgF? Someone wants to help or seeks help, they get shit.
Btw Fatum. You're really taking a radical turn in this thread. It's ridiculous.

Quite true.. TS is only asking for help to adopt those pityful cats. I see no point flaming at this thread. If you think the cats are pissing or shitting at your front gate do something about it to prevent the cat from shitting at your front gate again.
Prevention is not about culling...
