    • Engineering ?

      You got to be kidding.

To be wealthy, you have to learn how to make money out of money.

Being a engineer, you have to struggle with work, work and more work.

Not forgetting you have to compete with more engineers that are imported from other countries and drawing the salary lower.

Being a engineer will not make you wealthy.

I have not known and found any engineers that have become wealthy through being a engineer.

      Maybe I am not well-read.

Hope some one can prove me wrong.

Honestly, just becuase you study biz management dosen't automatically grant you the path to wealth and fortune.

In business its not what you know, rather who you know. Networking my friend; its today's tool to success.

    • Study for biz management or engineering you also work for others. Whats the diff? Depends on your abilities, your salary will vary.

You think employee will become rich meh? Unless you are CEO, fund manager, chief engineer who have shareholdings in the company. Your salary will not bring you anywhere.

To get rich, be a business owner yourself.

    • Study Alternative Energies, next century nid talents from there. And if u succeed, 80% of the world's annual expenditure goes to you. And Iraqis will curse u with their God for making their fossil fuel market crash. And George Bush will rush down from America to make friends with you and Singapore will be the right-hand country of America (if you are a sgrean creating the new energy in sg). And all ppl ard the world will make statues of you and worship you like a god and you will have the power to create a new religion because you have just saved the world, u will become the new salvation.

In Singapore, being a PM will rake in $20 million for 5 years, but only catch is you have to be offspring of a certain Lee.

various employers value the quantitative skills and problem solving skills of engineers who may particularly do well in the finance sector.

probably one reason you don't see any wealthy engineers in singapore is because the market for engineers is over competitive (with a small market demand for labour and large labour supply), driving the wages down; it does not help when firms have the opportunity to import foreign talents from india who can do the same job while accepting lower pay as well.

if you turn your sights on other countries such as australia, mining engineering graduates entering the market are looking at median salary packages in the 90k region annually, due mainly to a booming mining industry and the tons of natural resources waiting to be dug up.

all in all, an engineering background is a robust foundation for future career advances though you'd probably have to look elsewhere other than the singapore job market to experience its full potential.

have you considered studying economics instead?

    • There's no such thing as "better chance"; it's obvious that financial success is dependent on the individual.

    • You dun become wealthy by doing an engineering job UNLESS you come out with an useful and innovative patent.

Other than that, engineers in Singapore lead a sad life. Overwork, underpay, all thank to...

engineers staying put in SG lead a sad life....SG engineers are sought after overseas and well paid thanks to Sg's reputations for stressing them out and thus made them better engineers sad.png

But there is one big issue. Singapore engineers lacked innovativeness and creativity compared to Western-trained engineers due to the different styles of education they received. Hence impede their problem solving capabilities.

    • Actually, singapore engineers do have creativity and innovation.

Just take a look at the projects that created by both the uni and poly students.

But, the life of being a engineer in singapore is pretty sad.

Unless they branch out to management after reaching a certain stage of their career, their career peak would most probably be stuck as a engineering dept head.

Although they have high starting salary, their salary will be more or less stagnant after 10 years when compared to their compatriots in other industry.

With the rising cost in sg, the salary of the engineers will not be able to cope with the inflation.

Not forgetting that they are classified as cost centre and would be the first one to show the exit if the company is not doing well.
