The First series of circulation coins was issued on 20 November 1967.
2nd series:


The four denominations, namely 5-cent, 10-cent, 20-cent and 50-cent coins, were the first to make their appearance on 2 December 1985, followed by the 1-cent and 1-dollar coins on 28 September 1987.

We had 4 series of notes and some people are collecting them. I've $1, $5, $10, and $20 bird series and $1, $2, $5, $10, $50 ship. So if we got new series we can collect the old coins.

now that you mentioned, ya...
we practically grew up with the 2nd gen of coins...
but not many countries actually change their coins unless there is a real need...(eg, Indonesia phased out 5, 25, 50 Rupiah coins as it is practically worthless).
Countries where coins has British Monarch on it... hasn't changed for say... 100+ years?
except they do come out with commemorative editions once in a while.
