Not knowing ur language?

  i was just wondering......is it bad if u dont speak the languages ur parents speak?...i mean ur origin language.....the problem is that im a mix of malaysian and korean.......when i tell people that im malaysian and they will ask me if i know cantonese or malaysian and i will say no.................then if i say im also korean then they will ask if i speak korean and ill say no.....and people find that funny....-_-...........i wish i was like my mom cause she can speak mandarin,korean,english,malaysian,fu zhou,and some cantonese......and all i can speak is chinese and english ........i think im so stupid for not knowing how to speak the language of my parents............what do u guys think?is that a bad thing?

  no worry, u can always pick up the language as long as u r keen to learn it. It is not a big deal, be yourself , be happy :)

  I also can speak korean..........samsung, hyundai.....not korean enough is it?

  i think it is important to know the language that you need to survive. (in singapore its english)

  if your race means something to you its important you know the language that defines your race.

  compare the two.

  a chinese who cant speak chinese but speak english fluently.  no big deal right?  there are plenty around.

  an angmoh who cant speak english but speak chinese fluently. (or any other languages for that matter)  to date i have never seen one.

  why?

  of course it has something to do with the the angmohs.  they have always been trying to influence the world or is still influencing the world.  thats why we have terms like 西风日下.

  it is obvious at least in local context how the angmoh influence have eroded chinese values and cultures.

  If you really are the mix that you say, you should probably know that "malaysian" is a nationality, and not an ethnicity or a language. Are you malaysian chinese? malaysian malay? malaysian indian? You mum speaks "malaysian"???

  there IS a malay language and my mom is malay chinese and the places my mom live in speaks mostly fu zhou hua

  Well sometimes people grow up in a very different environment. A lot of ABCs can't speak chinese. Most Singaporeans usually can thanks to our "wonderful" education system.

  i refuse to speak to service staff in mandarin, or anyone who assumes that my ethnicity predicates a natural ability for me to speak mandarin, and i will tell them off if they decide to make an issue of it, which involves speaking to their management or writing in to the proper people in charge who many not know what goes on in their various outlets.
  
  we aren't in the stone-ages anymore, and while i think its acceptable to lower standards when in a place like a hawker center, it is not acceptable anywhere else and lowers the standard of the place immediately.

  Frankly, being Singaporean does not mean that one can speak Mandarin.It's all a social construct. We are all free to use whichever language we deem fit.

  Like Derrida once said, language is never innocent. We all code language with our intentions and values.

  Chinese dunno Mandarin, can only speak English is a not called a snob

  only top students take Eng and Chi as first language
