i dunno if u r aware tat christians r divided into 2 camps when it comes to salvation…while both camps agree tat salvation is thru the grace of God alone n nt by the works of man…the division is regarding the issue of predestination n freewill of man. miracles&prophecies is probably a believer of predestination from the way he shares in his posts…

ok…as promised tis was wad our tutor shared wif us…

our tutor shared tat since she was young she had been a firm believer tat it is every teacher’s responsibility to ensure students r well-guided n taught. hence, as a sch teacher n private tutor, it was her responsibility to ensure tat she taught us well nt onli academically but also socially whenever possible…

regarding punishments, she shared tat she was a believer tat punishments shld be harsh. however, she was quick to add tat punishments shld nt be abused. tis meant tat teachers shld nt be punishing students excessively. punishments shld onli be used when its called for. wad was arousing to us was the fact tat my frend’s bro was nt the onli one who was punished in such a manner b4. our tutor shared tat she had students who were also made to stand for the entire lesson, lasting over an hr, for similar offences. hardly any of them could go thru the punishment without having legs tat were utterly tired out n painful. however, she noted tat such cases were rare. usually, she would resort to punishments tat were less painful like giving the students extra hmwork, making them write lines etc…

our tutor also shared tat punishments had to be harsh cos they r meant to discipline n teach the students. she argued tat there was no pt meteing out light punishments as students will not learn from it. she shared tat there had been occasions when she had to cane students on their palms although tis usually happened to unrepentant n hard core students. for tis, she would inform the parents abt the caning. such a punishment was usually limited to males n those in primary school…for older students, she would resort to some of the punishments mentioned above…our tutor ended off by telling us tat she was nt one who enjoyed punishing students. in fact, she would love to have students who need nt be punished at all…her punishments may be harsh i feel, but yet justifiable…

ok as promised, here is the aftermathof the incident mentioned above…the lesson ended as usual at ard 915pm. after lesson, i stayed at my frend’s place to catch a tv program b4 going hm. abt an hr later, the phone rang. it was my tutor. she had reached hm n asked to speak to my frend’s bro. it turned out tat our tutor had called to ask if his legs were still painful from the prolonged standing. my frend’s bro replied saying tat his legs were stil hurting n feeling tired. after exchanging a few more words, they hung up…my tutor advised my frend’s bro to massage his legs so as to ease the pain…

at the next lesson, our tutor brought up the matter again. tis time she asked out of concern how long the pain lasted. my frend’s bro replied tat his legs were stil aching a little when he woke up the following morning. when she heard tis, our tutor looked slightly shocked. she was probably shocked at how bad an impact the punishment had on my frend’s bro. she then replied saying she hoped he had learnt his lesson n tat she would nt have to punish him so harshly again. from tis, she began to share wif us some experiences she had wif her students n how she dealt wif them…tis i wil share in my next post…

one of the reasons y we didnt sack tis tutor was cos she had been producing results…moreover, our parents felt tat she was a gd teacher due to the fact tat she taught in school n was strict…one thing i must say is tat she is nt the type of teacher who wil punish students frequently…she onli resort to punishments like the ones mentioned when the student is unrepentant or when the student realli deserved to be punished…her punishments may be harsh at times but they were justifiable…

some things i wanna add b4 sharing abt the aftermath of the incident above…the 3 of us were rather shocked tat time by wad my tutor did to my frend’s bro. none of us expected her to punish him so harshly even though she had meted out punishments b4…to us, the punishment was rather harsh n even our tutor admitted tat(will share more abt tis). the pain my frend’s bro suffered from prolonged standing was unforgettable to us…

for myself, i was also punished in a similar way once. however, the suffering i went thru was much less..i was in sec 1 tat yr…we juz had a spelling test which i failed…our tutor scolded me for doing badly n asked if i studied at all…when she saw the guilt on my face, she got angry n chided me for being lazy…in the end, i was told to push in my chair n stand at a corner next to the table. i was punished in the exact manner as my frend’s bro n ordered to study my spelling…

i was let off after abt half an hr…the tutor decided to postpone my spelling to the next lesson but i had to prepare 2 sets of spelling words…the lesson went on as normal after tat…i can stil remember tat my legs did feel a little tired at the end of half hr. hence i can understand how my frend’s bro must have felt from standing for one n a half hrs…it must be stated tat our tutor made us stand wif our legs tgr n we were nt allowed to stand on one leg at all…standing in such a manner can be very tiring on the long run which was clearly seen from my frend’s bro’s case…

wif regards to the case above, i recall tat after more than midway thru the class, my tutor said she needed to go to the washroom. as she stood up to go to the toilet, she turned n sternly instructed my frend’s bro nt to slack while she was away n to stand properly…by tat time, it was obvious from his facial expression tat his legs were hurting him…he had been standing for abt an hr n complained to us, when the tutor was away, tat his legs were so tired tat he couldnt stand properly much longer…

i recall how my frend tried to plead wif our tutor to let his bro off…however, our tutor was adamant n told us to concentrate on our work…it seemed to us tat she was aware tat my frend’s bro was suffering badly from the punishment as she allowed him to stand wif his legs slightly apart after she came back from the toilet…however, he was stil nt allowed to stand on one leg n continued to stand until the end of the lesson…it was a very painful experience for my frend’s bro n he did learn from it…

in my next post, i will relate the aftermath of tis incident which started wif my tutor showing some concern abt an hr after class if his legs were still painful…meanwhile, maybe u would like to comment if my tutor was too harsh in punishing my frend’s bro in tis case…

during my sch days, i had a tutor who tutored me mandarin from secondary 1 to secondary 4. it was a small group of 3 students…there were my primary sch classmate, his younger bro n myself. the tutor herself was a primary sch teacher n our lessons were usually held at my frend’s place at 730pm, twice a wk…tis tutor was somewhere ard her late forties/early fifties n she was known to be quite strict wif her students…she was very particular abt homework n would get very edgy when students dun do their work…yet being onli our tutor n nt our sch teacher, she was somewad more lenient towards us, although she stil expected a certain amt of discipline n commitment from us…

i recall a particular case tat happened when i was in sec2…tat was the yr when my frend’s bro was in pri 6, which was his PSLE yr…it was during one particular tuition class…1st i must state tat it was a regular practice of our tutor to start the lesson by going thru our homework n also to give us spelling tests…for tat lesson, it was no different…since it was PSLE yr, the tutor focused alot on my frend’s bro’s spelling n he was given spelling tests almost every lesson…

on tat fateful day, the tutor came n began the lesson by checking n marking our homework…after going thru our homework wif us, she then proceeded wif the spelling test while leaving my frend n i wif sth to read up on…it turned out tat my frend’s bro didnt study for his spelling test again…wad infuriated the tutor was tat tis spelling test was alredi overdue. it was supposed to be given the previous lesson but was delayed cos my frend’s bro didnt study it…the tutor was gracious enuff to give him a chance n delayed the test…however, tis time she was realli furious!! she scolded him for being lazy n said tat if he is going to carry on like tat, his PSLE results wil be affected.

after several minutes of scolding, our tutor decided tat he had to be punished. hence, she ordered him to push in his chair n stand at a corner near the table…he was made to stand wif both his legs tgr n ordered to study his spelling. it wasnt a surprise the tutor punished him as we have been punished by her b4…however, wad was shocking was the manner in which he was punished…the tutor was very harsh wif him thru out…she didnt allow him to lean against anything or put his hand on the table…on top of tat, she would scold him each time he stood on one leg…wad was unexpected to my frend n i was tat she made him stand for the entire lesson!!! tis was the 1st time she punished any of us in such a harsh manner as the punishment in tis case lasted abt one n a half hrs!!! my frend’s bro juz stood n studied his spelling for the whole lesson. it was obvious from his reaction tat his legs were very tired n tis could be seen by he bending his legs nw n then. we knew the tutor was aware of tis but she ignored him n continued wif our lesson. my frend n i felt sorry for him but there was nth we could do as our tutor turned away our pleas…

when he was finally released at the end of the lesson, u could see the relief on my frend’s bro’s face. our tutor sternly instructed him to make sure he is prepared for his spelling test at the next lesson…he was given a double set of spelling words to study n our tutor warned tat if he comes unprepared the next lesson, she will make him stand n hold up his spelling bk above his head for the entire lesson!!! i feel tat our tutor punishing him so harshly tat time was deliberate. yet i noe she meant well…she wanted him to do well at his PSLE n hence saw the need to punish him harshly so tat he will stop being lazy abt his spelling…well, in the end she didnt have to punish him a 2nd time…my frend’s bro sure learnt from tat painful punishment after tat…

hey i juz heard abt a case when the guy was punished in a very shameful manner by his gf…apparently, his infidelity was found out by the gal n there was a cold war for abt 2 wks…the guy then begged the gal to forgive him, agreeing to allow the gal to mete out any form of punishment she wished…
from wad i noe, the gal finally agreed to the guy’s plea n deliberately planned a social gathering involving her frends n classmates…she invited the guy to the party as well…

at the party, the gal took the guy to her room n asked if his promise to receive any form of punishment from her was stil valid…the guy said yes nt noeing wad was in store…the gal then opened her wardrobe n took out one of her evening gowns which she wore for her prom nite…she gave it to the guy n ordered him to put it on…next she made him sit at her dressing table n she began to put make up on his face…when it was finally done, she told him tat as a punishment, he will remain tat way until the party ended…

the guy pleaded for leniency of cuz but the gal gave him onli 2 options: either be dressed up like a gal for the party or she put an end to their r/s once n for all…in the end the guy gave in…

u can imagine the embarrassment he suffered when he showed himself at the party…all eyes were on him, many giggled at him…there were of cuz many who knew he was being punished for his unfaithfulness…the gal kept gd her word…she made sure the guy remained dressed like a gal until the party ended…the guy was so terribly embarrassed…

well, the gal forgave him in the end but the guy sure learnt his lesson n became a ‘gd boy’ after tat…

personally i feel tat one problem teachers in general may have is their temperament. while it is impt tat teachers learn how to control their emotions in class, it is a fact tat they r still humans after all. my form teacher in pri3 n 4 is an example of a teacher who could manage her emotions rather well. true, tehre were times when she got very angry n scolded us harshly…yet she didnt let her emotions get the better of her…she would nt punish us the errant student so harshly until he/she cried or vent her anger on the rest of us…

2 teachers i remember who were rather temperamantal include my chinese teacher in pri 1 n my art teacher in sec 2. my very 1st post was wad happened in one of her art classes in sec 2. as i mentioned b4, she was very sensitive abt vulgarities n apparently, the vulgarity she heard got her nerves…tis explains y she reacted so strongly…it seems rather obvious tat her anger got the better of her which explain y the punishment she meted out was so harsh. i find her someone who could nt control her anger well as she would often scream at the top of her voice when she got angry…although her anger did not always lead to very harsh punishments, her temperament was obvious for all to see…

i noe of a few cases where the gal meted out harsh punishments of some sort…below is one of them…

guy was found unfaithful by one of the gal’s frends…gal interrogated the guy n found out he had indeed an extra affair outside…infuriated, she insisted on a breakup at once…apparently the guy was unwilling, he begged for another chance…after a while, the gal agreed to give him one last chance…she told him to go to her place the next day…

when the guy went to the gal’s place the next day, he was in for a rude shock! the gal ordered him to take off his shirt, kneel outside her door n slap himself hard until she was satisfied…she left her main door open n told him to make sure his slaps were hard enuff for her to hear from inside the house…

it was a horrid time for the guy…from wad i noe, the gal kept him there for abt an hr! by then, it had alredi created a scene as passer-bys n neighbours had seen the guy being punished n some were giggling at him…the guy sure had a horrid time as the gal would come up to him each time she realised tat he was nt kneeling properly/nt slapping hard enuff n demanded he knelt properly n slap himself hard…from wad i noe, the slaps demanded were rather hard n the gal expected every slap to be of the same intensity…

the guy was forgiven after tat but he suffered swollen cheeks n bruised knees n sure did learn his lesson after tat…

ok so nw as promised in an earlier post, i will make comparisons btw some of the teachers who taught me during my younger days in sch…to start the ball rolling, i will compare the most feared teacher wif the most well-liked teacher..both of then taught me in pri sch…

the most well-liked teacher of cuz is my form teacher in pri 3 n 4 while the most feared teacher was my chinese teacher in pri 1…both of them were strict but they had diff approaches to guiding n disciplining students…my form teacher was one who believed in loving n caring approach…although she still resorted to punishments nw n then, it was obvious she punished out of love n care…she onli punished when there was a need to n hardly punished us very harshly…often she would explain to us y she punished us which did help us to understand n learn from our mistakes.

as for my chinese teacher in pri 1, she was one who believed tat students must be taught thru punishments…hence, punishments were very common in her lessons…she was very strict wif almost everything n u could find students being punished in almost all her lessons…moreover, she was unlike my form teacher above. she would mete out harsh punishments at times so as to teach the students a lesson..tis teacher is the one i mentioned earlier who meted out a rather harsh punishment to 1 of my classmates…she made him do continuous recitation at the back of the classroom for more than half an hr juz cos he had a habit of interrupting her without raising his hand…

i can still remember the kind of fear we had for her…we would be punished for the slightest offences like answering a qn wrongly(or dunno answer), whispering to our neighbours during class or nt paying attention in class…there were numerous occasions when students were made to stand for the rest of the lesson cos they committed one of the offences above…imagine making a pri 1 kid stand for the entire lesson juz cos he/she couldnt answer a qn correctly! my form teacher above would nvr do tat…she nvr punished anyone for failing to answer a qn correctly…

one incident tat happened in tat chinese teacher’s class remains vivid in my mind…i remember she was teaching on the board…at tat time, there were 2 boys would were standing…they were being punished for toking to each other earlier…wad happened was the teacher caught them whispering to each other n giggling softly despite being punished…the teacher lost her temper n ordered them to the front. she scolded them harshly for being rebellious, toking n giggling away when being punished…she ordered each of them to slap themselves on their cheeks 10 times in front of the whole class! then instead of letting them off, she ordered each of them to kneel on the 2 sides of her table n pull their ears!! mind u, we were onli in pri 1! yet she punished them so severely…the boys were made to kneel until she finished teaching(remaining time was for us to do some work) n by then, u could see tat they were close to tears from kneeling…

the main difference btw these 2 teachers was tat our chinese teacher hardly let anyone off for committing mistakes whereas my form teacher would at times…moreover, our chinese teacher nvr once explained y we were punished…she would simply make us do punishments n release us without teaching us y we were punished…from my observation, it seems to me tat our chinese teacher(who was in her forties) belonged to the older generation of teachers who believed tat punishments(harsh ones too) was the best form of guiding students..my form teacher, on the other hand, was in her early thirties n belonged to the newer generation tat believed in treating students wif love n care n tat punishments, if given shld be done out of love. students shld be taught y they were punished so tat they will understand tat the teacher meant well…such contrasting styles of teaching n guiding yet i believed both teachers meant well at the end of the day…

i can stil remember how my form teacher above took measures to keep the class quiet on at least 2 occasions…in the 2 yrs she had as our form teacher, there were few occasions when she had to punish the class corporately for making too much noise…the punishment was rather interesting although we hated it each time…

it was sth like tis…our teacher didnt like us to tok when she was teaching n she doesnt like to come to class, seeing the students making alot of noise…she often taught us to sit quietly in our seats waiting for our teachers to come in…the onli times she allowed us to tok in class was when she had stopped teaching n given us work to do…we were allowed to tok to our neighbours n discuss our work although the noise level had to be kept low…

she wasnt someone who would punish us without giving warning 1st…i rem one particular case when she left the class to get sth n the class started getting noisy…minutes later, she returned n stood at the doorway, glaring at the class angrily. the class quietened down immediately. i stil remember tat she walked to her table, glared at the class n scolded us for making so much noise. in the end, the whole class was punished. she made each of us put our finger on our lips, instructing us to keep it there until she said otherwise…

the lesson proceeded after tat…i still remember how each of us sat in our seats, listening to her teaching wif our finger on our lips…many of us felt it was rather fun to do tis at 1st…however, as the lesson proceeded, we began to change our minds…our arms started to feel tired, having to keep it at the same position thru out…yet nobody was allowed to put his/her finger down…the teacher even scolded a few students for putting their fingers down…

it was abt 15min later tat we were released from our agony…our teacher asked if we enjoyed putting our fingers on our lips…needless to say, our answer was a no…b4 releasing us, she made us promise not to make so much noise in future…i still remember tat she spent a few minutes after class explaining to us y we were punished n said tat if we find it tiring n embarrassing putting our fingers on our lips, we shld learn nt to make so much noise when theres no teacher in class…b4 she left the class, she warned tat if we do tis again in future, she will punish us the same way…well, it did deter us as the noise level in class was kept low after tat although we were punished the same way on 1 or 2 more occasions. at the end of the day, nobody complained tat she treated us unfairly as we knew it was all for our own gd…
