      AWOL NSman Teo’s accomplice gets 6.5 years’ jail, 6 strokes of cane

      SINGAPORE: Ong Boon Jun and National Serviceman Dave Teo Ming were good friends. When Teo was caught with a rifle near Orchard Road last year, it was learnt he had earlier been with Ong who did not report the matter to the police.

      For being an accomplice in the incident, Ong was sentenced to 6.5 years’ jail and six strokes of the cane on Monday.

      Ong was with Teo in a Geylang hotel room before he was caught in a toilet at Orchard Cineleisure later that night.

      Ong’s lawyer, Amolat Singh, said his client realised he should have left the hotel room when he saw that Teo had the rifle.

      Mr Amolat Singh said: "He was looking forward to the minimum mandatory sentence of five years. As you have heard, he has been sentenced to six—and—a—half—years. It’s quite close to the maximum of seven years.

      "We will visit him in prison to take his instructions. As you know, we act on instructions. If he instructs to appeal, then we will file the necessary papers to appeal."

      Ong’s adopted parents and a cousin were also in court. Ong’s mother was visibly shaken, wiping her eyes a few times outside the courtroom.

      The judge said he had considered the facts and implications of the case. He said it was incumbent on Ong to report the accused, Dave Teo, to the police so that no harm would come to anyone.

      More so, the judge said, because Teo had told Ong he was going to commit armed robbery.

      Teo’s next pre—trial conference is on 6 March. For Ong, his sentence is backdated to the start of his remand last September. — CNA/ir

      NEA says haze situation set to improve

      SINGAPORE: Over the past three days, air quality had been affected by an increase in land and forest fires in Indonesia’s Riau province, due to a dry spell in the region.

      However, the situation improved on Monday with visibly clearer skies. The National Environment Agency’s pollutant standards index also showed that the air quality was back in the ’good’ range.

      At 4pm, the PSI stood at 44 after days of moderate’ air quality.

      On Sunday, PSI rose to 56.

      Most school officials said they are keeping an eye on the pollutant standards index. If the situation worsens, they have their alternatives such as substituting outdoor activities with indoor ones.

      According to the National Environment Agency, rain over the past two days in central and Southern Sumatra helped to alleviate the haze.

      The latest satellite pass also showed two hotspots in Sumatra, a significant drop from the hotspot count of 100 on 21 Feb.

      Impending showers and strong winds are expected to ease the situation further, improving the air quality in the coming days. —CNA/vm

      Police, SCDF receive 60 calls about Sumatra quake—induced tremors

      SINGAPORE: The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) received about 60 calls from the public concerning tremors felt in certain parts of Singapore, following an earthquake in neighbouring Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Monday.

      The Meteorological Services confirmed that an earthquake occurred in southern Sumatra and said it registered 7.5 on the Richter scale.

      MediaCorp’s hotline received several calls informing it of tremors in Robinson Road, Sembawang, Jalan Sultan, Toa Payoh and Pioneer Road.

      Police said there was no cause for alarm. The SCDF said the public should remain calm.

      The SCDF’s advice for those inside a building when a tremor occurs is:

      b) Keep away from items made of glass or any hanging object;
      c) Do not use the lift;
      d) Do not use any naked light, in case there is a gas leak.

      After vibrations have stopped:
      a) Stay away from any exposed electrical cables and hanging glass objects;
      b) Report any gas leakage;
      c) Help the injured and call SCDF if the injuries are significant;
      d) Report any incidents or issues of law and order to the police.

      BOC Aviation to lease 8 Airbus A320s to Qantas

      China's banking regulator gave banks approval a year ago to establish leasing companies, seven years after it stopped issuing licences in order to clean up the industry. (Reporting by Eadie Chen; Editing by Alan Wheatley and Edmund Klamann) - BEIJING, Feb 25 - BOC Aviation, the aircraft leasing arm of the Bank of China , said on Monday that it will lease eight Airbus A320 aircraft to Qantas Airways Ltd , Australia's biggest airline.

      The agreement is the second deal between Qantas and BOC, which leased three A320s to Qantas in 2004, the Chinese bank said on its Web site, www.boc.cn.

      BOC Aviation will deliver the planes between the third quarter of 2010 and the first quarter of 2011 to Jetstar, Qantas's low-cost Singapore-based subsidiary.

      Singapore-based BOC Aviation, which Bank of China acquired in 2006, said it now had 70 planes leased to airlines worldwide.

      It has another 64 aircraft on order for delivery by 2013.

      Chinese banks are also actively expanding in domestic leasing to diversify their income streams.

      Industrial and Commercial Bank of China set up a leasing company in September, while Caijing magazine reported last week that China Development Bank was awaiting approval to inject 8 billion yuan into a Shenzhen leasing firm.

      China's banking regulator gave banks approval a year ago to establish leasing companies, seven years after it stopped issuing licences in order to clean up the industry.

      Flight SQ672 shuts down one engine before landing safely in Japan

      SINGAPORE: A Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to Japan had to shut down one of its two engines before landing on Monday due to engine problems.

      But flight SQ672 still managed to land safely with no reported injuries. The Boeing 777—200 plane was carrying 210 passengers and 13 crew members.

      A Singapore Airlines spokesman said: "The cause of the incident is being investigated by engineers and the aircraft is expected to return to service once investigations are complete and components changed."

      Flight SQ672 is a turnaround flight and does not continue to another destination.

      "As a result of the incident, the return leg from Nagoya to Singapore has been delayed. Singapore Airlines is doing all it can to transfer customers affected by this delay onto other flights today," the SIA spokesman said.

      He added that hotel accommodation will be arranged for passengers who need to catch a flight on Tuesday if they are unable to make transfers on Monday itself. — CNA/vm
