It's true that Purdue is pretty recognised in terms of engineering aspects. Singapore prospects i am not too sure.

      DUDE!!

I know ANU isn't offering true blue Mech Engin program. U can do Bachelor of Engineering major in materials and mechanical systems.  I know its not PEB accredited too. I guess its a bad comparison. Using the Uni U listed, whats the difference in prospect?

    • what the value of a Purdue mechanical engineering to a Aussie ANU mechanical engineering degree in Singapore? Don't wanna start any heated debate.

Purdue is no top 50 Uni but according to the below it pretty good in engineering.           http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/spec-doct-mechanical
I read Singapore employer perfer a ANU grad over Purdue grad. It that true?
cost of attending Purdue is higher than ANU. cost wise its already not favourable. If local employer show preference to a GO8 Uni, it means no sense going to Purdue.

      ANU tuition: AUD$22.8K
      Purdue: US$23K

    • UBC have very high entry requirement. If U are from Poly background chances of getting in directly is slim unless U have a B+ avg. Majority if not all Singaporeans there are from JC.

cost at UBC isn't cheap. at around CND$20K its the more expensive Uni in Canada. U can get good quality education at Uni like Uni of Western Ontario, York Uni, McMaster, Mcgill for less. I understand cost of living at Vancouver is on the raise.

Canada isn't as cold as U think, part of the US 48 states can be colder. No one actually sleep out doors and stay outdoors that long. as a student majority of your time is indoors and they are all heated. Asian students that have been there long enough can wear surprisingly little with all the snow! I really don't understand why the fear of Cold. Do U know the population of Canada is like 10M more than OZ. so cold why so many siao ppl wanna stay there. back in 1997 Canada is the top choice for Hongkees to run to.  Singapore is an Interesting country, we perfer distance over "repuation of Uni". ppl in Taiwan, China, HongKong, Japan tend to placed OZ as their last option after UK/US/Canada. Canada is not a popular choice as they have strict and high English requirement.

    • auckland university, u are looking at around NZD$22K a yr for tuition ( NZD to SGD is like 1:1). nice Uni nice big Asian population. No many Singaporeans. had friend studying there now and most ppl tend to ask, why not go Oz!

why The University of Newcastle? their forte is Edu and music? or cost is cheap and they do offer double major in teaching/arts or child edu/arts etc.. Singaporean still value named brand. stay safe head to GO8. at AUD$15.5K, I rather go auckland. Their strength might not be in this area but at least its the best uni there.

physical distance is misleading, once U are out of SG U are far away from home. any accidents was to happen (touch wood), still takes time to get to U. I rather go for best value for $$. its a life time thingy. if U are thinking of returning every break summer and winter, airfare isn't getting any cheaper. esp U are flying to NZ.  airfare is cheaper if U fly from Perth, then agan UWA is not cheap at AUD$18.5K. Do offer double degree Edu/Art(Music). then again its 4.5yrs long, honors yrs optional. wanna do double honors I think U need extra 2 yrs! miss home so much stay so near but then end up studying for a longer time 4.5yrs to 6.5yrs. US system jiao you a bit and U should be able to make it in under 3.5yrs.

I believe U are a lady, NZ is no shopping paradise, a big nature paradise if U enjoy the sea, hike etc. US is a shopping paradise, UMN is just mins away from Mall of America, all the A&F cheap cheap.. LOL.. ( of course thats a invalid reason going so far to study!)

BTW: Oz and NZ system are not much different from Local System. The English way not the American Way. ppl say Local uni churn out ppl that "du si shu" but I bet n matter where these ppl go they still do it. Its 1 approach to learning. Uni don't teach U the approach.

without a choice U are living in Singapore, U gotta go thru NIE. or U can choose to apply to NIE directly. Isn't gov sector unknown preference on where U grad from? if thats the case I wouldn't risk it for the distance.

to teach @ NAFA U need a Masters I reckon, the same goes with LASALLE. on top of that U will need working experience.

      http://www.lasalle.edu.sg/cgi-bin/WebObjects/LASALLE.woa/wa/page?pid=132

    • TS which Uni in Oz and NZ are u considering? Most Uni Singaporean heard of will be recong.

Avg grades and wanna go into a good Uni. Can try Uni of Minnesota, great deal right now. with fees reduced from US$22K to US$14K for international students. College of Liberal Arts should let U customize your major. NIE/NUS has known to send Scholars there for Phd in Child Psychology.

      eg:

      https://www1.icp2008.org/guest/WhoIsWhoView?PRSID=23832

      http://www.apa.org/science/psa/dec06dis.html

      http://cehd.umn.edu/students/Undergrad/majors/EC/default.html

better than selecting just electives U can design your own major. Many times Electives is just 1 or 2 subjects on the surface. U might not gain much at all.                                   http://discovercla.umn.edu/careers/majorsminors.html

As a CLA student, you have a unique opportunity. You can tailor your degree or major to your own interests and goals.

You can combine three areas of concentration rather than choosing one particular major to create a Bachelor of Individualized Study (B.I.S.) degree. The areas can be unrelated and you can even choose an area from another University of Minnesota Twin Cities college. One student, who completed a B.I.S. degree, combined communications studies, economics, and management courses from the Carlson School of Management. He is now president of his own business."

    • I am just looking at Tuition fee so it is at 535,800 yr.
282,000yen is 1st time admission fee, there after should be at 80K+ yen.
health insurance is at 12000yen a yr that is like US$100+
      http://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/res03/documents/admission2007_e.pdf

MIT scholarship for undergrad international? so few esp coming from Singapore. I believe easier to get 1 in SG thru PSC than getting 1 from MIT.
They rather give it to developing nations.
health insurance for US is like US$500+ a semester. 1 yr is US$1000.

Boston cost of living.. around US$1K for a tiny studio. U can share and bring cost down to US$500.
Tokyo 128000 yen a mth? more like SG$1200.
staying in Dorm is at 4700yen a mth. very cheap.
say accommodation cost is almost the same. the dfference in tuition of US$25k a yr. wow.. 1 need to US$2K amth on makan, travelling. There are ppl in Tokyo that work as clerk/social working that make around this figure.

I had friend that just went to Tokyo to study. And living near Waseda uni. Like 10mins walk. His apartment is 1 bedroom with kitchen and a bath! and 4 mth rental is like SG$5K. considered high liao loh... at least this is what I gathered from my Jap spouse.

food is indeed cheaper in States, but look at the quality.

Boston cost of living will be on par or higher than Tokyo.
MIT tuition fees is at US$34K.
Toyko Uni tuition fees is at 536,000 yen a yr ( 1 yen = usd$0.009) or us$5000 a yr. kinda heaven and earth difference...

    • if US goes into recession, so soon will repercussion arrive to OZ?
US market slow down, interest rate adjusted down..
Oz interest housing interest rate seem to be still going up.
My friend got a Place in Melbourne, she told me her loan interest rate is like 7% and have news it is going up. wow.. will the flow of PRC immigrants helps to sustain the housing market there? or already slowing down?? Ppl living in Oz will know.

if US goes into recession will Civil engineers be the only field receiving all the damage? or will be across all sectors even when Oz is so far away?
Will getting PR then be much easier then? if you goals is get a Oz PR..

you should not have issue getting into skilled industry.
If you do, that Uni is really questionable.

Achievement made internationally are not done undergrad level.
take ranking as a pinch of salt.. look closely at how they rank. do they care about the quality of undergrad?

Aero Space? Engine that GE build? GE don't really consider fresh undergrad candidates from 2nd tier Uni, unless U did Msc/Phd and have produce works they are interested in. I have seen guest speakers that attempt to be nice in class, after class.. they can tell you off.

Aussie Construction is raising? or already been doing so for X yrs?
how many yrs will you be studying in Uni?
Are you in time to catch the wave? or will you be catching the tail?
catching the tail is risky.. might get ax since you are new.

    • if you can speak Jap or willing to spend 1 yr doing Jap in Japan go ahead.
Tokyo Uni fees isn't that high compare to Oz Uni but living standard will be higher than Melbourne or Sydney.

if you plan on working in Jap company, Tokyo is definitely better than NTU. Why?
Jap support their Uni. You can get promote just because U grad from Tokyo uni.

2/3 of the 1st tier American Uni are hard for Poly students.
Uk Universities might be more willing to take Poly students.

Australian uni take Poly students left and right. ppl with 3.2+ GPA can make it to UofMelb Bschool, or 2.8 can get into ANU.
Canadian uni are hard on Poly students. GPA of 3.5 might get you in UBC, 3.3 definitely not! friend got rejected this yr!

if U decide do College from yr 1 in an American system, it will be easier to transfer to Uni like USC or UBC.

      interesting pt.. on THES

Methodologically, the index is open to some criticism. It is not specified who is surveyed or what questions are asked. The student internationalisation indicator rewards entrepreneurial volume building but not the quality of student demand or the quality of programs or services. Teaching quality cannot be adequately assessed using student-staff ratios. Research plays a lesser role in this index than in most understandings of the role of universities. The THES rankings reward a university's marketing division better than its researchers. Further, the THES index is too easily open to manipulation. By changing the recipients of the two surveys, or the way the survey results are factored in, the results can be shifted markedly.

This illustrates the more general point that rankings frame competitive market standing as much or more than they reflect it.

Results have been highly volatile. There have been many sharp rises and falls, especially in the second half of the THES top200 where small differences in metrics can generate large rankings effects. Fudan in China has oscillated between 72 and 195, RMIT in Australia between 55 and 146. In the US Emory has risen from 173 to 56 and Purdue fell from 59 to 127. They must have let their THES subscriptions lapse.

Second, the British universities do too well in the THES table. They have done better each successive year. This year Cambridge and Oxford suddenly improved their performance despite Oxford's present problems. The British have two of the THES top three and Cambridge has almost closed the gap on Harvard. Yet the British universities are manifestly under-funded and the Harvard faculty is cited at 3 1/2 times the rate of its British counterparts. It does not add up. But the point is that it depends on who fills out the reputational survey and how each survey return is weighted.

Third, the performance of the Australian universities is also inflated.

Despite a relatively poor citation rate and moderate staffing ratios they do exceptionally well in the reputational academic survey and internationalisation indicators, especially that for students. My university, Melbourne, has been ranked by the 3703 academic peers surveyed by the THES at the same level as Yale and ahead of Princeton, Caltech, Chicago, Penn and University of California, Los Angeles. That's very generous to us but I do not believe it.

i've never thought of going to america for further studies so probably won't consider that country, no idea why. Confused

i don't think it's necessary for me to get into some top international universities, as long as it's well-heard of in singapore. does not have to be too prestigious. i'm not fighting for places among those top universities.

      Your teachers from where?
Japan, if U are not at top Uni like keio, Waseda, Tokyo, Kyoto.. no need to study 1.. just pay $$ to get degree. thats their culture. if your teachers don't know.

Hong Kong mah.. didn't they used to teach using English text? guess they changed.

Which country can you find ppl treating others equally? not even Singaporean to PRC or Indians!!!!

Go NZ, some PRC felt some s*** from locals. Go Oz, also have news for you. Go Europe like france, germany, Italy also get S***.
don't know sweden, norway etc.. few go there.. ppl on exchange say sweden is damn good but expensive to live even they don't make u pay tuition fees.
Even Canada, in places like Vancouver you might encounter something.

U can even find Singaporean chinese discriminating themselves at times at Uni. The rich refuse to miggle to the poor. how leh?
