The only reason why men should not compare themselves with women is when women are seen as weaker than men. I'll definitely fell pai seh if I compare myself with a weaker group.
But women are no longer seen as a weaker race, are they?
Women serving the nation is not about fair or not fair. Life is unfair. Some women don't give birth. Some men don't need to serve NS too.
I never said women who go for NS and give birth at the same time are not admirable. I've seen female soldiers who are married with children. Nobody said they are not to be given welfare. Nobody said they are not to be given extra credit.
If you want to mention about fairness and unfairness then I can also mention the fact that more men have to serve NS than women who do not give birth.
It's true that men can never give birth. But you can't ignore the fact that more fathers are taking up more responsibility in rearing their children and doing the housework at home, sometime even at the expense of their career. There are times when guys give more than women.
We guys are now doing our job. We are bringing better welfare to our fellow people. In times of war we give up everything we have to fight for the ones with love. In time of peace we give up our freedom to learn how to defend our nation in times of war.
The role of a soldier is no less than that of a mother. On mother's day, we show gratitude for the love and care that a mother showed to her child. But to all soldiers, the SAF day is just a reminder of their duty. How many truly celebrate SAF day, or even know that such day exist?
I'm truly dissappointed at how different level of expectations are asked from men and women...we men are always expected to be stronger in every areas than women, but yet cries of 'gender inequality' is heard when we performed better.
Just go and take a look at the 'SAF Forum'. See how those guys who asked how to 'chao keng' or question the need for NS are being flamed, being called 'gu niang'. When we fufill our duties as a soldier nobody remember us because that is what we are supposed to do anyway. And yet when we request for more citizens to fufill this sacred duty we are being flamed again.

Attended a 'traffic safety talk' a few days ago where the police officer gave a talk about safety while driving bicycles, bikes and cars, even though I don't drive the latter two.
But anyway, during the talk, it was mentioned that cyclist are encouraged to cycle on the roads rather than on the pavement to prevent inconvenience or injury to the pedestrians. It was the first time I actually heard this sort of thing.
How could cycling on the road be anywhere safer than cycling on the pavement? I thought getting knocked down by a bicycle would be better than being knocked down by a car...
And there's cycling with the flow of traffic, which sounds illogical to be because cycling against the flow of traffic would actually allow you to see incoming cars...

Lame and childish. There's so more important and serious things going on in this world that I don't understand how people could be even slightly interested in their meaningless catfights and bitchings.
That's why I support females serving NS. See larh...now they don't get a chance to grow from girls to women.

Grow up already will ya?
Perhaps MrSean used the wrong word in describing soldiers as 'slaves' here. But his other points hold true. NS is a meaningful and much needed experience, there's no reason why women should be excused from it. They are no more sacred than us men...if we have a duty to protect the nation then they too have similar duty.
Conscripting women into the army is not so much about whether or not we 'need' women or not. It's like debating whether or not we 'need' NS or not...some may think NS is obselete because S'pore is too small to be defended, but nevertheless NS brings about other benefits that more than justify it's needs.
Whether we 'need' so much women in non-combatant roles doesn't matter, what matter is whether or not our women are fufiling their roles as citizens of the land they are living in, whether or not they learn and understand the values of what it means by being Singaporean.
I don't understand how is it wrong to compare men to women. Comparison is everywhere, and Singaporeans are best at making comparison. As long as the reasons are valid there's no need for rejection of ideas.

What a biased view of these people, influenced by what they see and hear. They always forget about the virtues of others and just focus on their mistakes.
And i personally dont think that he had personal corruption. If you read carefully, it says he lend money to certain people and organization, but there was never a mention about him himself taking the money by himself. This is the key thing.
Next, they say he had a condo under his name. And people assume that he owes the condo. But if you were to take another look, it could be somebody whom he trusted setting him up? A monk also get cheated too anyway.
But do you realise the opposite also holds true for some Buddhist? When he appeared to be doing good work his 'fans' were praising him and almost regarding him as a local representive of the Sanga. When this controversy occurred some started saying what he did was not against morals, he was framed, he was not at fault, we have no rights no judge him, etc etc. It's funny how we also forgot that we have no rights to judge other people when it comes to criticising other religions because we don't even understand their culture.
Everyone is bias in some way or another. It's just how you see it.

Nobody is insisting that men and women have to be treated in the same way. People do realise that there is differences in gender roles. That's why most of those who agree that women should be conscripted too did not insist that they should serve combatant roles, but could contribute towards support and services.
One of the reason given as to why NS is neccessary is that it can strengthen social cohesiveness. However, this logic is obsolete as long as women is not involved in NS.
I personally believe that NS is also useful in strengthening one's mental and physical strength and tolerance, speeding up the process at which one matures into a young adult as they learn about responsibilities and office politics. There's no reason why women needs no such training. I just hate it when girls go crying and whining over very lame things such as break-ups with boyfriend or whatever...there are bigger things out there in this world. Go serve NS and you'll see it.
I cannot find a single valid reason as to why women do not need to serve NS. Go refer to other threads in the SAF forum and look at the reasons given as to why man should serve NS. Why can't the same reasons be applied to women?
Everyone has a duty of protecting their country and family, not just the guys.
On a lighter note, even if women are not conscripted to the army, the very least they can do is to go and find out what the guys are going through in the army right? I've got female friends who asked me why am I using (lousy and non-stylish) non-camera phones, who don't even know what 'guard duty' is, or worst...don't even know how long does NS last.
At least I know pregnancy last for 9 months...

There's a lot of things to be bothered and worry about. The effect of this case on the reputation of Buddhism. The effect of this case on Ren Ci Hospital and it's patients. The effect of this case on charity organisations in general.
After the NKF saga, confidence in our local charity scene had already suffered a great deal of damage, mainly because NKF was one of the most trusted charity organisation in Singapore. Nevertheless, Ren Ci Hospital still received a relatively great amount of support because people see Ming Yi as a respectable, truly compassionate and uncorrupted leader. People trusted him.
But now that such a widely respected venerable and leader of a charity organisation has gotten himself into such controversy, it is not unimaginable that the public's confidence level may plumet all the way down this time. People now don't know who and what to trust anymore.
At the end of the day, the 'cause' laid down by a person could have a seriously negative 'effect' on so much more people. It's not just about 'his own cause and effect'.There's lots to be done before maximum damages are reached.
I do not know Venerable Ming Yi personally, so I guess I do not have any rights at all to judge him. Perhaps it is out of true compassion on his side when he gave out loans to his affliated companies to make investments in hope of reaping more money to benefit his patients. Maybe. I don't know.
But one thing for sure is that by breaking the coporate law regardless of his initial intention, he damaged the reputation of our charity scene. And that means much.

As a good governors, they should be more proactive in this areas, reduce their salaries, give up govt perks and benefits to save the lower class citizens, encourage the rich to help the poor so as to create a balance, peace and progressive society, if they do that, then that is a good govt that i will adore and love them forever. I dun mind to marry LKY as second wife.

It's a tricky business. Protestations have the potential to end up violent, chaotic and uncontrollable.
But then again, to arrest people for making perfectly peaceful protest that does not bring about inconvinience or disruption to the nation at large seems quite ridiculous too.
Ever heard of cracking a nut with a sledgehammer?

Me also studied H2 History, but took the exam last year...got a 'B' grade, though I seriously doubt how I could have even pass in the first place. The questions that came out for the 'international' paper last year was totally unexpected for me, and I totally bullshitted all the way in my essay...for some essay, it was barely one paper long :(
I would agree that H2 History is bloody damn difficult, simply because you don't know how to study for it at all. It is unlike maths and physics...all you have to do is just practice and practice.
I spent great time and efforts memorising so many facts for my history, only to realise that it's not enough...I must know how to write and use those memorised facts to my advantage in the essay.
And yes, not to mention that there is simply not much written essays for me to take reference to.
I'm sorry I can't help you much either, because the essays I've written myself back then was totallp crappy also...the best essays would be like perhaps 16/25, the worst being 8/25. But I guess I can give you my old lecture notes and reading materials if you think it'll be useful...
