• Rank slide on chest has been standard for british army since...forever? It makes sense for the SAF to adopt this practice but it should be standadised across all ranks. The Orifices don't need something like this to feel specshul do they, or will this hurt their fragile hearts?

I wonder what sort of testing has been done on digital camouflage by the SAF or DSTA. I think the British Army very recently looked at digitising their camouflage but apparently, tests show their standard camouflage performed better with minor alterations to the colour.

I suspect the DSTA just googled MARPAT and then cut and paste into photoshop...

Camouflage is not as simple as putting a piece of cloth on different backgrounds then deciding which is less obvious. You have to look at the distances you want the camouflage to perform, how versatile you want it to be and more importantly, you have to look at how the camouflage performs when the wearer is moving and standing still. Otherwise, everyone will be wearing real-tree camouflage.

We know how the yanks operate. Its not always which kit is best (though they do have some of the best kit in the world because they can throw money at the problem) but also which is in fashion. The difference between the yanks and Singapore is they have tons more money to throw away than we do.

I am not convinced about digital camouflage, in case anyone is wondering...

    • Hello Gents (and Ladies)

I'll be making a trip down to either of the above shop soon as I have some trouble with my feet and think I need to get my feet assessed and hopefully receive good advice about running shoes.

Will any bro or lady out there give an opinion on the service and prices in either of the above shops. I am particuarly interested in hearing about the gait/foot assessment. Thanks.

    • Went to emart the other day. They used to have running shoes with wide toe-boxes (like 4E). Now they only do shoes that are 2E wide. Clearly a step back.

    • Not really. This guy wants to defer because he has a place in Cambridge to study economics. No mean feat, but he cocked it up by applying early. He wants to apply for deferment but his unit clerks and admin staff, being lazy incompetent bums, tried to fob him off. That means more delays and all the time the clock is ticking.

Ultimately he failed in his application. In the course of his application, he asked people for help, and help was given. The PMO and others responded rather more quickly to some than others and the TS is unhappy. So she wrote a blog, naming names, publishing letters and potentially creating a very embarassing situation for those who tried to help.

The woman bit the hand that fed her. You know what they say about women "snakes with tits" spring to mind. The words "dumb", "doorknob", "as" and "a" also springs to mind.

    • You have a justified reason to be upset about the way the SAF does things but your blog is wholly unprofessional.

It is not right to publish publicly the letters of others without having obtained express consent. LKC agreed to help the boy but you essentially stabbed him in the back and used the fact that his infuence had some, but not decisive bearing on the case to criticise the government. Your points could have been made without making overt reference to named persons. It could certainly have been made without publishing other people's letters.

You are ill-mannered and have lost whatever moral high-ground you might have possesed. Go away.

Kopisatu, do you mean through www.ns.sg?

Does this mean that I cannot book into army camps to use the emart? I live near a camp you see and it would be ideal if I can just pop in.

    • Heard through the grapevine that I might be called up for reservist training soon. Problem is I have misplaced most of my army equipment. I do not want to turn up for training in slippers, bermudas and a bright orange giodarno T-shirt so I want to visit an emart to get some stuff.

Anyone know if I can enter army camps to use the emart?

    • Ignore the people who tell you to suck it up or endure. It isn't worth risking permanent (or even temporary) mental health issues for NS.

Speak to your superior and if that fails speak to the equivalent of the CO. Note down your problems and ask if he can help you. I know of a few people who were posted to be clerks after having spoken to the CO. One of them even tried to commit suicide.

It really doesn't do to try and tough it out if your gut instinct tells you that you are harming yourself.

    • Wow. I looked on the ebay shop again. To buy a Silva Expedition 4 under buy it now will cost about $70.

That is how much it will cost you to buy in the UK where gst is 17.5%.

I think I will make a trip to Sheares or Beach Road.

    • Thanks. $20 sounds very cheap. Is it an an imitation?

I looked at the ebay shop. The prices are quite high (probably more realistic) but he adds $12 shipping charge for shipping to singapore...even though the bloody item is in Singapore.

    • Its a fling. The correct term is fuck buddy. What are you worried about? If you want to get in a serious relationship with her, then tell her. If she says no, then that's that. That is something that most people will experience in their lifetime. You still have a fuck buddy or you can move on if you want.

      :)

Dude, go pay for sex, then just move on. You're not in a bad state really.

    • Wow. The latest news suggest that about 200 000 people have died in the disaster and more will die. But lets have a referendum.

Personally, I do not care because I am a cold, callous individual. What I cannot tolerate (because I am a bit of a snob) is a lack of critical thinking and logical thought. That has been demonstrated in spades.

Unless the govt of burma backs down, I cannot see how this can be resolved.

The west could simply invade sovereign territory and distribute aid but that is very messy from am international relations pov. They could donate helicopters temporairily to a country burma trusts and let taht country run things but then I am not sure if the burmese govt allows any government to help directly.

The only way to compel cooperation will be if concerned countries got together and told Burma that they will be treated as pariahs, and forced relevant countries to freeze the assests of the burmese govt. (A point of interest: one of these relevant countries will definitely be singapore. The Son of one of Burmas richest man is living a lovely life in Singapore and some Burmese general had a nice trip to singapore not long ago. Therefore Singaproe must hold alot of their assets)

As I said, from a humanitarian pov, refusal to accept help to distribute aid is wrong. It is almost akin to genocide. That at least, is clear.

Just take a look at the news article above, from AFP.

It is critisizing the junta again, and make a link/ suggestion that referendum should be delayed.

So isnt that a politicization of a 'humanitarian' issue?

It is not a 'humanitarian' issue purely anymore, is it?

So I would say their worry is well-justified. If they let in the foreign aid and foreign media, they will make a negative spin again and interfere the Myanmar's politics.

I doubt the military there dont care about their people sufferings in this big disaster.

What I hope is, ASEAN is more active and can help Myanmar more, and also deflect some of the Western critism. I think Myanmar will be more accepting towards help from ASEAN, whether material or labour.

      Meat Pao.

      Your arguments are patently absurd.

It is not politicization to say that the referendum should be postponed. It is commonsense.

You've got thousands dead, many more dying, and many more in need of food and medical supplies. But hey, let's have a referendum. Yes, we will be diverting resources to hold the referendum but so what? Who cares?

You have clearly let your bias agaisnt the US cloud your view on this. Of course, the Government should be wary of its regime being undermined - and that government certainly has reasons to be afraid, not least because of its unsavoury practices.  However,  the problem with the government is it fails to show that it cares about this problem at all.

It has no capability of delivering aid to its people. I am not talking about government corruption here. I am talking about logistics capabilities. It just simply doesn't have the equipment to carry out such a wide-scale operation. Even when unloading from 1 or 2 planes, they had to resort to forming human chains to do so. One wonders how they are going to distriibute the aid once they manage to get those goods onto lorries.

    • What a waste of talent. This is a box office hit but quite clearly, it could have been a box office sensation.

Let's get the ratings over with. 6.5/10. Watching this is like watching a mediocre HK action movie or a nice but not great cartoon. A few chuckles here and there but then untimately a forgettable experience.

I ought to have known better. I've just checked out the director and it turns out this Rob Minkoff is a bit of a nobody where action movies are concerned. His last films were 'Stuart Little 2' and 'Stuart Little', and he directed 'The Lion King'. No wonder throughout the movie one can't help feeling that the director has the artistic ability of a drunk  racoon with below-average IQ. There are several sections in the movie where you thought "Hang on - it would be awesome if he did this". But of course he didn't.

The soundtrack is also awful. It is often intrusive and frequently detracted from what is on screen. Listening to the soundtrack, one gets flashbacks of 90s movies like Jumanji and Home Alone. Those are not bad movies by any means, but they are a different genre altogether.

All in, this is a travesty of an attempt at film making. I think the producers fucked up by choosing the wrong director. This Rob Minkoff is not even a safe choice where action movies are concerned. The producers must know that any movie with Jet Li and Jackie Chan in it will make money - one really wonders why Rob Minkoff was gifted the job. Yuen Wo Ping is also hardly on the cutting edge of action. He does a good job but I think perhaps the future lies in people like Donnie Yen... now there's a man who is the absolute master at glamorizing violence...

    • Perhaps 6mm is the best compromise. More lethality but without too much an increase in weight.
..

The 6mm round would probably weigh between 90 and 100 grains, and utilize a cartridge case between 40 and 45mm. The basic idea is that the 6mm would give infantry rifles...

greater reach and penetration against hard targets, and it would allow machine gunners to carry more ammunition. It would also give the latter group lighter recoil than the 7.62x51mm. Supposedly, the 6mm rounds the Army has experimented with have equal or better penetration than the 7.62x51mm round at normal infantry combat distances. One common caliber would also simplify supply.

Anyway, for years, the 6mm concept has been put way back on the proverbial back burner, due to the laws of inertia and the fact that other NATO countries seem to be perfectly happy with the status quo--a status quo, by the way, that we, the United States, basically forced on them. Since then, our military has been hesitant to try to force yet another caliber of our choosing on them. However, now might just be the time. Recently, the 6mm concept has come back under the military's radar as a result of the rather lackluster performance of the 5.56mm against Al-Qaeda forces in Afghanistan, not to mention the equally problematic effectiveness against hostile Somali gunmen in Mogadishu back in '93. Our 62gr M855 round, hyperstabilized by a very fast 1 in 7 barrel twist rate, has apparently been zipping right through the skinny Al-Qaeda, just like it did the Somali's, instead of yawing or going frangible inside them. It's therefore been taking multiple rounds, as many as 4-5 rounds, to put a single man down. Needless to say, this is not what you want in a CQB scenario....
http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=282

      Or maybe the 6.5mm grendel?

I think arguments that the 5.56 wounds and therefore increases the burden on the enemy is nonsense. When I shoot someone, I want him to go down and stay down! Besides, the argument that the 5.56 is superior because it wounds instead of kills can only be made if the 5.56 consistently wounds - which it doesn't. It sometimes kills and sometimes wounds, like most other rounds out there.
