AFAIK, all the above you shortlisted do not meet your (hold value to upgrade) requirement. They also do not have a reputation of good FC. But FC is highly dependent on how u drive and ur driving profile so its hard to guage now. If you really do want a car that holds its value in the budget segment, toyotas and hondas are the way to go. Personally, I would ask you to have a looksee at the Mazda 2. Pretty good value to me.
But if i die die have to choose one from the list, the SX4 has my vote.

mr2 i feel is a dangerous car to drive.. its mid engine rear wheel drive.. means it can go into snap oversteer anytime...
s2000 thought is flashy and nice and all... its really aint veh suited to sg road driving...
its engine, the F20, though high revving and have veh high power output.. its low end torque suffers...
furthermore.. its been ard for quite some time...
Mx-5 handling power? zhen de mah? Need to ask Regan about that man.
and erm, KM version of s2k uses the F22C, higher power output and lower max revs..

Anyone of the above cars would serve you well. They are all good cars. Might I suggest you go get a couple of car mags for a read. Do not get any of the local rubbish for they are mostly paid advertisements and are only good for getting the car's stats. Then again they sometimes get even that wrong too.
Enjoy!

Dude, from all the above, this is what I feel.
In the SG market, Toyotas, Hondas, Mercedes and BMWs tend to hold onto their value better, AFAIK. It is because they are the more well known and well liked and more bought makes. If value when you sell is what you are looking at, you can do far worse than the above.
Also, the 4 door Honda Civic Type R is only available from Parallel Importers. It is a 2l engine + 6spd manual. Only Manual. Cannot be indented from Kah Motors. Handling is amongst the best in the business. Downside is that it has 0 comfort. Which lets you know what is going on between tyres and road, but also might introduce your dinner to the dashboard. Personally, driving a manual is a none issue. Better control, better FC, easy maintenence.
Personal recommendation.
Honda Civic FD - Same body as the Type R, but far more comfortable. Also far slower, unless you are into modding. Available in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0. Auto or manual to your preference as well. Spacious too.
Volkswagen Passat 1.8T - Luxury sedan from VW. Spacious and comfortable. Only available in 6spd auto.
Merc C200 - Newly launched with 1.8 supercharged engine. Luxury and pace should be best amongst the 3 here. Price also accordingly highest.
and for your query about the Mazda 6. Its mainly the same drivetrain with a new fancy dress. Spacious, not very quick, heard not very FC friendly as well, but thats also very dependent on how you drive. Personally not very seduced by it, but if you dig the way it looks over everything else, it would be a good buy. Just don't expect to sell it for much in 2-3 yrs time.

I have short listed a couple now, so would be nice if the guys here can give me comments based on specs and value for money. Oh, and if you think there are other cars that are in the same criteria as the ones below feel free to add on.(I like the designs - mainly luxury sedans)
- Mazda 6 Sedan/Hatchback (Hatchback for this model is an exception - it's a beauty)
- Mazda 3
- Mazada MX5
- Mazda RX-8
- Peugeot 207
- Alfa Romeo 159
- Nissan Cefiro
- Honda Accord 2008
- Toyota MarkX ZIO
- *I've seen the Honda Civic(R) series, does it only come in manual?
Thanks for you guys help so far
P.S. can someone explain to me the difference between the symbols (R) and (V) in them Mazda 6 series?
U seem to like them Mazdas eh. Heh. Something you might want to know tho. Mazdas in general do not hold onto their value very well. Especially when compared to Hondas and Toyotas.
Mz6 - Very nice car. If possible would personally prefer the 2.5 HB
Mz3 - V pretty car. Not v high on space. Old line with replacement coming soon.
MX-5 - 2 door 2 seater. Nice, but not easy to handle for new drivers. Just ask Regan Lee.
RX-8 - 4 door 4 seater. V nice, esp manual. Quite fuel thirsty tho.
207 - CC? GTI? Lots to choose from with these numbers only. Personally like the GTI version, but it's mainly manual only.
AR 159 - Gorgeous car!! 5yr warranty also looks good. Seldom does well holding value wise tho. Personally would go for manual as well as I dun trust their Selespeed yet
Cefiro - EOL model with new one just months away.
Accord 08 - Car with looks that polarise opinions. Heard raves, but personally dun like. If you can get past the looks, the 2.4 might be the best buy.
Mark X Zio - Available only from PI. Do you need a MPV?
Civic Type R - 2 versions available locally. Both Manual. 2 door HB from kah motors. 4 door sedan from PI.
R and V are their grade lvls. Dunno which is which, diff rims, trim, HID vs halogen lights etc etc. Check with ur frenly neighbourhood Mazda dealer for details. :P

@normalboi, was expecting the regulars to give me some suggestions, in my case the original idea(might still go ahead) was to buy a BMW Z4. 216k but my family agreed on it on the basis that it should be all play while I'm younger. My dad suggested Lamborghini(spelling?), on my 21st birthday.
But on top of the 216k, the high fuel consumption, COE, high insurance coverage with an additional 50k(if not insurance companies will not cover) leads me to think that the money could be spent more wisely.
The other plan was to drive a BMW 3 series or a Mini Cooper(So my sis can drive when she returns from Australia time to time)
I prefer sedan designs as imho; they look more professional(which is important in my futuristic line of work and of course my personal preference)
Do you mind going on the specifications of bentley continental gt speed with technical details in layman terms(so I can understand) and also price.
Ford Focus ST, Peugeot 207 GTi, VW Golf GTI or GT, Mercedes C180 or C200, Honda Civic 2.0, VW Passat 1.8T, Alfa Romeo 159 are some that I can think of..
Some of the above cars only come in Manual, some have Autos only, while some have both options. Since u mentioned luxury 1.6 - 2.0, I only mentioned those with at least a modicum of luxury, and left out the super sporty, hardcore speed machines. Hope this helps.
p/s: if u wanna repay me for my help, any of the above for me will do just fine xD

I cant believe none of the regulars have replied..
to TS, i believe that its ur dad thats gonna buy the car for u.. and u seem to be only looking at contis..
for a new driver.. u might wanna consider slightly cheaper cars first.. wont so heart pain if it gets scratched and what not..
anyway.. i will not anyhow recommend cars for now.. do me a favour... ask ur sponsor what kinda budget he has in mind for u.. dun say no budget.. if no budget then pls.. bentley continental gt speed is the only option.
go get it, then will try my best to give u what i hope r valuable suggestions..
