    • If I remember correctly, the A4SU can go supersonic, but only in a dive... in other words, it can't hit supersonic under its own power, but it can if hit supersonic if the conditions are right.

Please feel free to correct me, I could be mistaken.

    • Personally, I agree with edwin3060, in that history has a lot to do with the Gurkhas' presence in Singapore. The fact is that the Gurkhas have proven to be useful in the past, and I believe that their presence is still useful especially after 911. One issue that the poster seems to ignore is a practical one. As I am sure everyone is aware, the SPF is desperately in need of more manpower. As the poster himself hints, even the SOC may not have the manpower to be as large as it needs to be. Having said that, how does the poster intend to fill the gaps that will inadvertantly appear if we remove the Gurkhas?

Aside from worrying about the Gurkhas and the "threat" that they may pose, I think SPF has larger problems to solve. Namely, how to recruit and retain professional officers, and jack up its manpower so it can do its current job more effectively.

In any case, nobody here can claim to fully know how the Gurkhas are managed, what happened at Mt Vernon, or what led to the disputes. My view is that we should not get ahead of ourselves.

They could also be made in Thailand, I think. In any case, you are right, they are definitely not from US.

    • Hmm. I wonder how long it will take before the Fords start smelling as bad as the Rovers? i will always remember the smell, a mix of oil, rubber, sweat and stagnant water, and occassionally 'wet dog', especially after the dogs had been loaded for guard duty. Ew...

I will miss the rovers tho. Still remember hiding out in the rovers during heavy rain and watching the widscreen fog up while out in the bushes.... Laughing

    • Yup, the F-15s are back to flying in Japan!

      image

Ok, seriously, I just wanted to share this pic but couldn't find anywhere else to put it up. Wait, they remotely look like f-15s, so may be not totally unrelated, right?

But if any of them are injured, and if we don't qualify from this round as a result, so be it.

Much as I desire the Lions to win, we don't need malicious kungfu role models in Singapore football.

Yeah, Noh Alam Shah acted extremely unprofessionally. Such hot-headedness certainly needs to be punished. For anyone who missed the incident, its up on youtube. The ferocity of the attack is unforgivable!:

    • Personally, I am not hopeful of S'pore getting into the next round. Being totally unfamiliar with getting this far, I am not sure if Singapore will be able to stand up to the sustained pressure of playing at this level. However, the Lions have been pulling a few surprises these past few years under Raddy, so there is a glimmer of hope, I suppose.

I am totally thrilled that the Lions have gotten this far tho, and it says a lot about the improvement of the Lions' play. I will be downright delirious with joy if we do get past this round, tho! Let's hope the guys give 100% and keep our fingers crossed!

u guys are one fucked up bunch of ppl..go and support england lah. singapore doesnt need fake supporters-glory hunters like all of youse

Eh, dun like dat lah! I think we need all the support we can get! The important thing is that the team gives their best and that everyone gives them positive support...

    • Wow, interesting idea!

I can see why it didn't work tho, especially what it says with the fouling of the system due to the rounds. If they had trouble with too many AK mags, I wonder why they don't just use AKs as backups instead of going thru all this trouble to develop a M4 to shoot AK mags and rounds?

    • Thanks Vigelic, looks like I missed the thread. So, does this mean that there are no more plans for a purpose-built track in Singapore?

I'm sorry, but I've been trying to follow the news articles and it seems like its always a on and off issue. Frankly, I've simply lost track (pardon the pun) of whether we are getting one or not.

    • Hi,

There was some talk back in March about building a motor racetrack in Singapore (Not F1 track, pls. That's a separate issue) that could host some regional races and provide local speed freaks with an outlet without running the risk of killing others on the road..

Anybody knows what happened to it?

    • For the grenades SAF uses, the pin needs to be twisted and pulled, and even then its pretty tight. I reckon you could use your teeth, if you had a jaw like a pit bull and teeth made of steel. If not, I think you're better off using your hands. It took me a good ten seconds of wringing, twisting and grunting to get the pin off the first time I threw a SAF grenade. Then again, I am quite skinny, so it could have been a case of muscle (or lack of). Laughing

As for the deformation of a bullet hitting a target (or body), I suppose a projectile might just avoid deformation provided that most of the energy has been dissipated, but there is just enough for it to embed itself in the target. So, I suppose a possible scenario which may apply is if the target is hit just outside of the effective range of the bullet, where the projectile is almost out of steam, and doesn't have the speed/energy to smash itself into the target. Having said that, I leave you to figure out the the odds of finding someone who has gotten a non-deformed projectile dug out of them.

      My 2 cents. Smile

Edit: Btw, we are talking about assault rifle rounds (e.g. 5.56), right? I think somebody told me pistol rounds may not react the same way or something...

    • Okay, now that all the arguing is over...

Looks like there's still a bit of work to be done concerning the night racing issue.

Mosley: night racing not yet a reality
By Mark Glendenning Friday, May 25th 2007, 09:22 GMT

FIA President Max Mosley says that there is a long process to be followed before the idea of a Formula One night race becomes a reality.

The recent announcement that Singapore would join the F1 calendar in 2008 was coupled with an insistence from Bernie Ecclestone that the race around Singapore's streets would be held at night in an effort to add to the spectacle as well as making the event more accessible to European TV viewers.

Ecclestone has also warned that the future of the Australian Grand Prix could be under threat if the race did not take place at night in order to boost television audiences in Europe.

According to Mosley, however, the concept has not yet formally been presented to the FIA.

"The thing is, we've not actually had any application yet to run a night race," Mosley told reporters in Monaco.

"There are no (existing) criteria. If and when we get an application to run a night race, that will have to go to the circuit commission, and that will go to the safety commission, and eventually the world council.

"And there will be criteria - there will be criteria for armco, safety barriers, run-off areas. There would have to be criteria for the lighting, and all this would be looked at. We obviously would not approve a night race unless we were satisfied with the safety levels."

Mosley also suggested that the FIA might be reluctant to authorise a Formula One night race without testing the concept on another category such as GP2 first.

"I suspect that, as is also usual with new circuits, that we would want to run some sort of other racing that way before we committed the world championship," he added.

    • Just wondering if anyone knows what happened to the Black Knights? I remember watching them flying their all Super Skyhawk team back in the 90s during the first few AAs. They put up a pretty good show, and there's nothing like watching your own country's AF guys doing their thing! Anyone knows if they'll ever bring it back, or is it officially dead?

    • I would assume that many of these people posting such messages are probably students or young people with too much time on their hands, and do not seem to be very well-informed and somewhat immature. I don't think we should take it too seriously and get too perturbed.

Having said that, the nationalism that the Chinese have is a worrying trend. It appears they have very little choice in expressing any political view unless its a rabidly nationalist one. Chinese who doubt the CCP don't seem to hang around very much, if you get my drift. I do find that a bit disturbing.

Ah well, as someone on the thread has mentioned, the net is free space for free views. Just take it with a pinch of salt and try not to get too upset. Arguing with people like these will very likely be a futile exercise anyway.

    • Well, I strongly support having the F1 in Singapore.

My view is that it will help to boost Singapore's image around the world. You and I both know that although a lot of people have heard about Singapore, but have very little idea of where and what we are. Having images of Singapore beamed around the world would really help to generate more awareness about Singapore (i.e. that we are more than just another "small asian country").

This awareness, coupled with F1's glamour factor and following big money circus (actually, who follows who is up for debate) will inadvertantly have significant spinoffs, especially when the track is actually in the city itself, instead of some track in the moddle of nowhere.

In the long term, the benefits of the exposure we'll get through F1 will probably be difficult to calculate and put into bare numbers, but it's definitely there.

I am very sure that the Singapore F1 GP will be a good thing for the economy, provided its organised and run well, without any embarrassing restrictions (both on the race and spectators) that will demonstrate our Government's penchant for going overboard in being totally kiasu and kiasi.

My personal view, Singapore F1 GP is a watershed in some ways for the Singapore govt. It shows that the govt is seriously looking to go upmarket and attempt some risk in the chase for economic gain. Yes, it took LKY to complain about F1 to get them moving, but at least its a positive move. Singapore has to make brave decisions if it wants to stay ahead in the economic race, and I think this is one of them.

Oh yeah, and in the end, we also get to have a premier motorsport event right at our doorstep! I mean, how cool is that?? Laughing

      Just my 2 cents.

    • Alrighty then. The paperwork is done, so now is the groundwork. Its going to take a lot of time, money and manpower to make sure that the GP gets done right. Let's all keep our fingers crossed that everything goes to plan..

I wonder how I can get myself in a marshaller role?
