Rochor more famous than Tekka? Got to be kidding bro! :D

As for Bukit Panjang, the proposed name is the same as the LRT station too anyway.

    • Haha I voted for Watten, the name I also suggested in the nomination exercise.

I fully agree that no station name should have a significant relation to a nearby educational institution, something even the NUS has no clout over.

    • It is good to see that six of my suggestions were on the final shortlist. angel.png

So my votes are as follows:

      • Rochor: Tekka (as per my nomination)
      • Stevens: Whitley (as per my nomination)
      • Duchess: Watten (as per my nomination)
      • Sixth Avenue: Eng Neo (as per my nomination)
      • Blackmore: King Albert Park (as per my nomination)
      • Beauty World: Anak Bukit
      • Hillview: Hillview (as per my nomination, which was no change)
      • Cashew: Hazel Park (wondered out loud, but did not nominate it)
      • Petir: Bukit Panjang (as per my nomination)

And thank God "Hwa Chong" did not end up on the shortlist! smile.png

The ERP arent switched on yet...no?

Anyway my biggest concern is that the KPE merges into the ECP before reaching the city. I bet that will become the ultimate bottleneck every weekday morning, and potentially led to jams streatching keep into the tunnel!

    • I have seen Singaporeans do all three farely frequently, so I arent sure if this form of racism is justifiable.

In fact, the supposed habit of "squeezing" near to people can be a very welcome effort to ensure our crowded trains can pack even more folks in. Far too many people believe their "social distance" extends from the door to the middle of the carriage and refuses to budge!

One way I ensure my flight path is clear is by making obvious stomping sounds, which most reasonably attentive commuters will hear and automatically move to let me pass.

Finally, we are a Commonwealth society, so to the left we shall stay if we aren't moving quickly. It is not a matter of body strength (which as some pointed out, running up probably needs more arm strength than just standing), but ensuring most will be assustomed to it.

Only four thou. Station announcements can lend an air of classiness if done tastefully. I find those security and no food/drink announcements far more naggy and even embarrasing with regards to the later in particular.

    • If grown-ups wish to do stunts like this, its entirely their problem. What amazes me is when adults implicate their younger counterparts in similar actions...and then fail spectacularly.

I recently witnessed a mum rushing into the mrt at the last minute, pulling her toddler who was barely able to keep up. Needless to say, she wasent able to pull the toddler into the train on time and the door slammed on his arm. The door bounced back open (if I remember correctly), but the ordeal obviously scarred the wits out of the poor kid and he was wailing uncontrollably for the rest of the journey.

Hope it was a lesson learnt both for the mum and the child!

      finally we go the

10 years after Hong Kong launched their all access transport smart card (aptly named Octopus card because of its many functions just like the octopus has many legs )  we Singaporeans fianlly go the same way. Our card shuld have the same features as theirs, can buy almost anything at almost anywhere, including famed 7-eleven purchasing, i. They say is cashcard inside so i guess shd be ok with meeting that.

Hong kong has no ERP so cannot compare. but whats good is ERP can now be paid in this new card. yipee. i mean i shd prob throw away my defunct cash card. lol

defintiely hope to see the ez link logo at Supermarket check out counters..

then again with the cashcard function, NUS students shd soon be tapping away at photocopier machines photocpying stuffs. lol

      ZYX

The Octopus card does not have "many functions" per-se. It is a card with one chip, just like any other contactless card. In fact, the Octopus card and the Ezlink card uses the same Sony FeliCa chip.

What gives the Octopus card greater usage rates is its abiility to rope in other merchants and various payment points to adopt the card reader, something which can also be done with the EzLink card. If Singapore starts introducing EzLink card readers in all commercial stores, vending machines, IU units etc, the result would be exactly the same.

It is a no-brainer really, on why Singapore still dosent have a single cashless-card system. We just can't make up our minds and settle on one system, and the high credit-card usage is obviously not going to go away either. Hopefully this will be a step in the right direction to finally marry most of these functions together...

    • But I am wondering how they intend to upgrade the existing platform? Building the current southbound one is easy, but upgrading the current one would definitely involve half closures of the platform at least?

The naming guidelines clearly says station names should avoid the names of buildings, which would include schools I believe. I certainly hope this will not set a bad precedent for school alumni to start clamouring for their school names on important public transport landmarks. I was thankful, for example, that "Kent Ridge" was selected over " National University" despite being an alumni from NUS.

However, I would note that "City Hall", "Expo" and "Stadium" can be said to set bad examples in this regard. ;)

The furthest I have tried on foot is from Lavender to Tanjong Pagar. But I was not actually walking parallel to the route, but taking a winding route around the city's scenic spots as I was on a photographic "expedition"!

    • I would support all announcements in all four languages too, just as it was before when they announced the stations names this way. This is befitting of our city as a multi-cultural one, and there are actually tourists who marvel at this even if they cannot understand 75% of it.

When I was in Taipei, they make all announcements in Mandarin, Hokkien, Hakka and English. They still have time to close the door thou. ;)

    • My submission was as follows:

Rochor Station ==> Tekka Station - More renown, historic and localised name for the area.

Stevens Station ==> Whitley Station - "Stevens" gives the impression that it is somewhere nearer to Orchard Road, which it is not.

Duchess Station ==> Watten Station - Watten Estate is on the opposite side of the canal. "Duchess" sounds too pompous despite the names of the roads near it.

Sixth Avenue Station ==> Eng Neo Station - Less generic and more localised name.

Blackmore Station ==> King Albert Park Station - Name of an estate in the area which is far better known. Superstitious and traditional Chinese may even see the name as "inauspicious".

Beauty World Station ==> Toh Yi Station - After the HDB Estate which is nearby. "Beauty World" is commonly associated with the commercial buildings and is less appropriate.

      Hillview Station (no change)

      Cashew Station (no change)

Petir Station ==> Bukit Panjang Station - The main MRT Station in a town's commercial core should take the town's name, as is the case in every other town. If need be, it is the Bukit Panjang LRT station which should be renamed as Jelebu etc.

I generally prefer names in Asian languages over western ones, although it's not possible to come up with feasible ones in several locations. I hate the "Cashew Station" name, for one, but there just dosent seem to be a good alternative. "Zhenghua" perhaps, for that was the older Chinese name for the area? Or perhaps "Hazel Park Station"? At least that sounds more professional than Cashew!

Thanks dudes! I also saw Service 74 in the direction of AMK along AMK Ave 3 at the junction with Yio Chu Kang Road last Saturday at 1851hrs. If I am not wrong, I remembered SBS9077X (SLBP 157) was the STAR team version too.

And I spotted SBS9004G (service 174) at 1625hrs along South Bridge Road near Hong Lim Park last Friday with the runner version. It is becoming quite a challenge trying to capture both! wink.png
