As a catholic, I attend Novena church mass sometimes during weekdays.. Their homilies were good pretty easy to understand.. The priests were "people priests". They were pretty friendly, notably, Frs Paul Lim, Peter wee, Bill Heng, Gino henriques and many others and build good rapport with people, catholics and non catholics alike. They are doing a good job of bringing people to know Jesus, in particular non catholics..
They have a great devotion to Mother Mary. people of all religions came to pray and seek help. Countless petitions were answered. I have friends who go to saturday novena regulary to pray.. I do not go that often maybe once a while.
As to the recent case involved the alleged "exorcism", I'm not sure whether if true exorcism did carried out. However, one's thing for sure.. the priests there would not hestitate to help you if you are in spiritual danger or trouble. at anytime you can ask a priest just simply to bless you or pray for you.. if you want to go for a trip or a sugery. for a peace of mind. or invoke Divine Protection for you.
If what the so called "exorcism" proved to be false at the end of hearing.. it would be sad for the plantiff seeking compensation. Let us not mock at them or speak ill of them, but rather pray for their healing of the victims and all involved. Same goes for Mr. Bawja? the lawyer who said "may God forgive You!" Just pray for him.. But Please Mr. Bajwa pls dun say this .. again.. it is not very nice.. Even if you are of other religion, I would not remark or insult yr religion..
I know Fr. simon Tan on a personal basis and though he's known for a straight talker, he's a good priest. He was formerly an altar boy? form st. anne's church way back in punggol under Fr. Berthold. a french priest who has passed on. (God Bless His soul!) Someone mentioned his teochew in his homily.. that's laughable..that's ok.. In fact, many priests are teochew.. The present Archbishop Nicholas Chia is also teochew from nativity church in kangkar hougang. Teochew "nan' as they say.. ha..
Hi
Thank you for sharing :)
Yes, many priests are Teochew. In fact, many Catholics are Teochew. Last time, I ever heard that Hougang area has a relatively higher population of Teochew. And if you live around there, you will notice that the Catholic population there is also high.

Sorry for posting again but I forgot to mention in my earlier post that I was at the Courthouse yesterday. Fr Simon did a great job on the stand. What a contrast to the way the SW and her family conducted themselves. Fr Simon rocks!
Were you there today? How was it?

Title : Exorcism trial drama as defence lawyers demand apology from plaintiff's counsel By : Date : 03 July 2008 2117 hrs (SST) URL : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/358080/1/.html
SINGAPORE : Day 20 of the Amutha Valli forced exorcism trial saw tempers flaring in court on Thursday.
Defendants' lawyers Dennis Tan and Anthony Lee lost their composure in court after Amutha's lawyer RS Bajwa called Father Simon Tan a liar and asked God to forgive him.
The lawyers, who are representing six other Novena Church members in the case, demanded Mr Bajwa apologised for insulting someone's religion. Father Tan is not represented by the lawyers.
But Mr Bajwa maintained he was merely blessing Father Tan. In reply, the Novena Church priest said he was not offended, as Mr Bajwa was just doing his job.
On his second day of cross examination, Father Tan maintained he had conducted a prayer of deliverance over Amutha. But he conceded parts of the process were similar to the rite of exorcism.
As to whether Amutha had been allowed to go to the toilet on the day of the incident in August 2004, Father Tan said Amutha had only asked to go to the toilet once. He had also asked Amutha's daughter and two woman churchgoers to accompany her.
When Amutha became violent, Father Tan said other church members had held on to her ankles and not her thigh.
The hearing continues Friday with Father Jacob Ong, the other co-accused priest, taking the stand. - CNA /ls

Archbishop had a unique styleCATHOLICS here mourn the death of Archbishop Emeritus Gregory Yong, who led his flock well from 1977 to 2000 by his sterling example of humility, kindness and love.
Many will remember the late Archbishop Emeritus as a master in the art of homiletics (the art of preaching or writing sermons). His unique style of teaching church doctrines, by humorously asking 'true or false' questions, was simple, stimulating and effective. It did not fail to keep his congregation of all ages engaged and captivated, even though his homily was usually more than 10 minutes.
While the Catholic Church is saddened by the loss of this great shepherd, it also rejoices to know he has returned to his heavenly home.

No problem, Honeybunz :) Dr Ong does have a sweet, grandfatherly face! Not because I side the defendants that I also think he is overly sympathetic to the SW. How come so convenient her lapses - when she goes to the gym, when she wants to hang out and have fun, she never lapse. Her lapses only when she goes to Changi Hospital? Then must renovate Changi Hospital - very bad fengshui! She can't be the only patient suffering because of bad fengshui in Changi Hospital! hohoho.. so riduclous right?!
ya lor. When asked why the video showed that she could go gym, dinner, temple and stuff, Dr Ong, without hesitation, said "those were her better days". Very sympathetic towards her one lor. How would he know it's her better days when he was not there at the gym, restaurant and temple to diagnoise her.Nonetheless, I still think he's a victim of this case. Not because he was traumatised by the cross examination but because his patient dragged him into all this mess.

Gillian Chung goes to Hollywood
She reportedly went to the US to audition for an Oliver Stone movie. -ST

Mon, Jun 30, 2008
The Straits TimesHONG KONG - Singer- actress Gillian Chung of Hong Kong girl duo Twins is finally going solo - to Hollywood.
After months of lying low following her involvement in Hong Kong's sex photo scandal in January, Chung took off last Saturday to the United States, reportedly to audition for an Oliver Stone movie.
She had stopped work since February after nude photos of her taken by actor Edison Chen hit the Internet, leaving Twins' other member Charlene Choi to appear at public functions alone.
At the airport, Chung, who had been learning dancing and English while awaiting her comeback, looked fit but did not answer reporters' questions.
According to Oriental Daily, she is believed to be meeting Stone for his war movie Pinkville, which is about the investigation of the 1968 My Lai massacre in Vietnam.
Stone is said to be in search of Asian actors for the movie which stars Bruce Willis.
Chung's manager Mani Fok confirmed that the actress was meeting a Hollywood director.
But she dismissed new rumours that Twins had broken up, saying: 'Twins have always had separate work commitments.'

Honeybunz, I wasn't referring to how he appeared on the stand. I think I mentioned - when he responded to the press! Yes, the lawyers were only doing their job but he got all worked up about it.
And I did say that what he said could be applied to the SW's lawyer but he only got upset with the defendant's lawyers.
Anyway his attitude kinda proves that the rumours circulating around the hospital are true.
It was all about Dr Ong because as he said he made the call and passed the case on to his subordinate. She accepted his judgement. Which was the first part of the rumour - that he is the one who encouraged her to take this position.
Bear, I certainly hope that the snake woman/family have to suffer some kind of punishment for this slander and false accusation.
BTW a few months ago, the daughter's testimony like so can't be bothered about what doctors her mother is seeing or any facet of her mother's life. now too late to act all concern and object to her being labelled as SNAKE WOMAN. A rose by any other name. A snake is a snake - the symbol of lucifer! She so rightly picked the animal to depict!
paiseh. I admit I have soft spot for old people. Perhaps I overlooked other details.
But I do agree that he was not unbiased. During last Fri's hearing, he was gearing towards Amutha's symptoms in his reports were all involuntary (ie. she could not have faked it) but Mr Tan (the defence lawyer) disagreed with him.
I didn't stay for the 2nd half. Tired liao.
