If reports that the 23-year-old will undergo surgery next week to cure a long-standing ankle problem are correct, Ronaldo looks sure to miss the first few weeks of the new season.
He has been subject of a prolonged tug-of-war, at least in the media, between Manchester United and Real Madrid, who are reportedly willing to pay a world record transfer fee to take him to the Bernabeu.
The Spanish champions have been publicly courting the winger, who scored 42 goals for United last season, despite United's insistence that he is not for sale.
However, since Portugal's involvement in Euro 2008 ended, the intensity of Real's unsettling campaign appears to have lessened, suggesting that Ronaldo will be staying at Old Trafford, as United have said he would all along.
The English and European champions seem more concerned with the player's fitness than any transfer rumours, especially with reports now suggesting he will go under the knife to clear up his ankle injury once and for all.
Surgery is expected next week, and would force Ronaldo to miss United's pre-season preparations - and to go through a six-week rehabilitation period.
On Thursday, United's medical staff met Ronaldo and representatives from the Portugal national side to discuss the player's injury.
The problem affected Ronaldo's performances during Euro 2008.
A statement from his club said: "Manchester United's medical staff met with the medical team from the Portuguese FA and Cristiano Ronaldo in Lisbon regarding the ongoing treatment of his injured right ankle.
"As a result, further specialist advice is being sought and an announcement will be made on any action in due course."
A United source has also described a mooted £70million transfer of Ronaldo to Real Madrid as "utter nonsense and totally laughable."

Surgery Imminent For Ronaldo
Manchester United's Portugal winger Cristiano Ronaldo could be going under the surgeon's knife in the next two to three days, according to Sky Sports News.
Following the previously reported meeting yesterday between United representatives, Ronaldo and members of Portugal's medical staff to discuss the necessary course of action to treat the winger's injury, Portugal's team doctor told Sky Sports News that Ronaldo is expected to be operated on at the weekend.
The meeting with United officials is believed to have been the first time since the end of last season that Ronaldo, 23, has spoken to the Red Devils while Real Madrid's courtship of the player has been raging through the media.
It is also understood that Ronaldo delayed the operation in order to go on holiday.
Surgery will mean Ronaldo missing the pre-season training and match schedule, although United will be aiming to have him fit, available - and still a United player - when the 2008-09 Premier League campaign kicks-off on August 16th.
United's first fixture is at home to Newcastle United that day.

It can't be that all the seats in the carriage were taken by women. Surely at least some of them were taken by able-bodied men.
And if he can carry his baby while taking a photo of those two women with his camera phone, it shows that he is NOT in dire need of a seat.
And by snapping those two women, posting the pic online and smearing them like this.... that is NOT the mark of a gentleman!
If anything, if those two women wished to do so, it might in fact be possible for them to lodge a police report under Penal code Cap 224 Sec 509, as stated by MohamedF.
That fella really slapped the faces of all of us men.
I thought of another thing, but not logical.
Maybe was snapping pictures of women on MRT and suddenly someone caught him doing this. To counter attack quick, he post this article saying nobody gave seats to him

Wah lau.
He makes the rest of us men lose face.
No strength to carry his own baby.
No balls to even ask whether they could give up their seats for the baby.
In fact.... I'm seriously wondering how he can carry his baby and take photos of those ladies with his camera phone at the same time.
why didn't he aim at men for not giving up seats for him instead?
maybe he had something against women
