huh... what coast line... didn't know that Singapore has enough coastline that warrants any purchase of MPA to patrol? Or you meant anti-priacy rightOriginally posted by SBS1908B:You all also forgot about little known hero. Fokker F-50. This ASW aircraft guards our coast-line.
The F-50 is an ASW aircraft. A budget version of P-3 Orion.Originally posted by Joe Black:huh... what coast line... didn't know that Singapore has enough coastline that warrants any purchase of MPA to patrol? Or you meant anti-priacy right
The MPAs have more of a patrol surrounding waters including the various straits and South China Sea and performing tasks like mid-course update to the Harpoons.
Detecting submarine by means of using the Surface Search Radar to pick up periscopes or snoklers or the IRST to search for IR signature of snokling subs.Originally posted by spencer99:The Fokker-50 do not have a MAD array and do not have sonor-buoys.
So how they detect submarines for ASW?
It is more for Elint, Maritime patrol and maybe anti-ship and as a platform to provide OTH targeting for Anti ship missles like Harpoon.
I guess the seahawks will also be able to detect subs. They are more mobile than F-50, added advantage.Originally posted by Joe Black:Detecting submarine by means of using the Surface Search Radar to pick up periscopes or snoklers or the IRST to search for IR signature of snokling subs.
tat mobility comes at a price though, seahawks can onli loiter for max 3 hours while F50s can do 8-10(not sure though, can anyone help???)Originally posted by SBS3624G:I guess the seahawks will also be able to detect subs. They are more mobile than F-50, added advantage.
They have different roles.... the F-50 will have to "transit" to their operating area. part of the fuel is used to travel to and fro.Originally posted by Lance_han:tat mobility comes at a price though, seahawks can onli loiter for max 3 hours while F50s can do 8-10(not sure though, can anyone help???)![]()
yep the SH-60 seahawk does have a dipping sonar....kinda SOP in most navies...Originally posted by spencer99:They have different roles.... the F-50 will have to "transit" to their operating area. part of the fuel is used to travel to and fro.
The Seahawk operate off a FF and is in the operating area almost right after take off..
i am not saying one is better then the other... just different roles.
The seahawk should have a dipping sonar if i am not wrong.
eh...nvm...since someone else alreadi answered...hehe soriOriginally posted by rascallyun:Do you think both MPA and Heli uses sonabouys? OR do they only rely on the MAD and Dipping sonars?
but the question is, can u get tat one or two hits on tat sub b4 it does the same thing to u???Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:Anyway , submarines are really vulnearable in a sense , it can only take 1 or 2 hit...before the entire crew dies off..
anyone disagrees/agrees with me?
No, the best way to counter SSK is always another SSK. Seahawk can do the job, but their search range and extreme complexity of the ocean prevent them a sure cure.Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:Don't worry , the seahawk definitely can detect the scorpene subs...
Ooh, thanks for enlightening me.Originally posted by wd1:our Fokker 50 MPA is what it is - a Maritime Patrol Aircraft, not a dedicated ASW patrol plane like a P-3 Orion. it has search radar and an IR/optronics suite, which are intended for surface targets like ships. it was not intended for sub-hunting, and the fact it can detect periscopes is secondary to its primary mission against surface ships.
therefore, MPA has no sonobuoys or MAD or torpedo capability that appear on ASW craft like the orions.
in contrast our Seahawks are dedicated ASW craft, and have all the modern ASW equipment - sonobuoys, search radar, optronics suite, dipping sonar, torpedoes, datalink to mother ship etc.
it is interesting to note that our Seahawks are souped-up SH-60R variants - the very top of the line. they'll actually be even more capable than USN Seahawks.
The sub was never designed with toughing out impacts in mind (except for dealing with depth charges), which is why their primary weapon is mainly stealth.Originally posted by SMAPLionHeart:Anyway , submarines are really vulnearable in a sense , it can only take 1 or 2 hit...before the entire crew dies off..
