Guti Celebrates Club’s 5,000th Goal

Real Madrid are on the verge of becoming the first team to hit 5,000 all-time Primera División goals. If they can get one strike past Numancia this evening then they will have done it.
Ruud van Nistelrooy's goal in the 2-1 defeat at the Riazor a fortnight ago was strike number 4,999 for Los Merengues. He, as well as Gonzalo Higuaín and Arjen Robben, will be out to hit the five-thousandth this evening.
Captain Raúl has been rested, so the historic strike will not be scored by him. Ergo Ramón Calderón, club president, may present the commemorative plaque to a Dutchman or an Argentine if and when the fateful goal crosses the line.
Madrid are already the top Liga goalscorers in history, having hit 4,999 in 80 years. Barcelona are second with 4,935, while Athletic Bilbao are third on 4,163.
Marca reports that whoever scores tonight (if anyone) will join the following illustrious names:- Leoncito: scorer of the first ever Liga goal for Madrid.
- Pahíño: scorer of goal #1,000
- Gento: scorer of goal #2,000
- Juanito: scorer of goal #3,000
- Zamorano: scorer of goal #4,000.

Guti Celebrates Club’s 5,000th Goal
José María “Guti” Gutierrez will join a special list a Real Madrid legends after registering himself as the owner of Real Madrid’s 5,000th goal in the club’s illustrious history.
The Real Madrid vice-captain has been given the honours of marking the club’s 5,000th goal scored when his deflected left foot strike drew Madrid levelled against Numancia overnight in a match where the eventually won 4-3.
He will thus join a long list of iconic Bernabéu figures to notch up a landmark goal for the club, from Morera (1st ever Real Madrid goal), Leoncito (100th), Alday (500th), Pahiño (1,000th), Gento (2,000th), Juanito (3,000th), Zamorano (4,000th) to Raúl (4,500th).
The 31 year old dedicated the milestone goal to his family and although acknowledging that it was a special occasion, he chose to focus on the team’s victory.
“I dedicate the goal to my family. It’s always special to score, although the important thing was the team’s victory,” he said after the match.
“To score the 5,000th goal is secondary. The main objective was to win infront of our fans.
“We knew Numancia was going to defend a lot and they are a team who take their chances well,” he analysed his opponents.
“As for ourselves, we know have a very difficult month ahead and we must show our true potential,” he added.
